    Hatton/Mayweather: Whats best for boxing?

December 8th isnt only the showdown of the p4p champ of the world and the champ of the 140 lb division.

The outcome of Hatton v. Mayweather will set the table for the welterweight division and possibly the 140lb. division.

If Floyd Mayweather defeats hatton then (regardless of what floyd says) more than likely he'll be defending against Cotto next.

If Ricky Hatton defeats Mayweather I think he could quite possibly stay in the 147lb. divison (mattering on if he wins and if he does how good he looks doing it). For all we know 147 could suite hatton better...who knows.

If hatton wins then we are looking at Hatton v. Cotto.

I see hatton v. cotto a much better fight than mayweather v. cotto.

If i were Miguel Cotto i'd be pulling for hatton as i think hatton's style plays more to cotto's advantage than floyd's.

With floyd nearing the end of his career a win over hatton sets the table for bouts with the top fighters of the welterweight division.

    we're talking cotto, williams, etc.

However i think that floyd would have much more problems with someone whose style is comparable to his own.

This might stir some conflict but i think fighters like Paulie Malignaggi and (yes...) Cory Spinks STYLEWISE would be the biggest challenge for mayweather.

Mayweather has great hand and foot speed and quite possibly one of the best of his generation when it comes to defense and i think fighters like Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, etc. get tired from trying to match mayweather's speed.

There are two ways to beat a guy with speed...be as fast as him and have the endurance to do so...

    or time him.

timing will always bust speed. its a fact.

paulie and cory are fast and slick (not a lot of punching power there)

cotto and hatton are great with body shots and can do some counter punching.

I think these 5 guys probably have the best chance to beat mayweather and i cant really see spinks or malignaggi doing it.

i dont think hatton can do it (even though he's a good guy and im pulling for him).

I say cotto probably has the best chance...castillo gave mayweather problems and cotto reminds me of a castillo just a castillo or steriods...he's pretty quick...has great power...we seen he can box a little bit.

how do you see the division playing out as a result of the hatton/mayweather bout?

do you think cotto is the one out of all the fighters a division up and a division down of the 147 lb division who are most likely to beat mayweather?

    let me know your opinions.

i say best chances (in order) are:
    Cotto
    Hatton
    Malignaggi
    Williams
    Spinks

if floyd would be able to somehow retire undefeated after fighting 5 top prime guys then that would be something amazing but i dont think it will play out like that.

But the guy, that I sincerely believe no one can beat... is Paul Williams...

How do you beat a guy thats 147 pounds, a southpaw, 6'2", Long reach, does not stop moving.. and does not stop throwing punches... how do you beat that? i think if floyd got in the ring with him, it would be just constant punches thrown at floyd, and im not saying theyd even hit him... but if you throw 120+ punches a round, your gonna win, whether there landing or not... I would have to take paul williams simply by completely and utterly outworking everyone, including floyd.... i actually met him in the airport on my way back from the roy jones hanshaw fight in biloxi... real nice guy... so what do you guys think? does that make sense? I just think you gata a REAL strong guy in cotto, but nothing REMARKEABLE, he CAN BE outboxed... where i think paul... how do you deal with that??? thats a long day for anyone... hes truly a current day tommy hearns... thoughts?! thanks guys.. and be easy!

if Hatton wins I think he should move back down anyway. He must be one of the smallest welterweights ever. He can only fight the guys who aren't huge in the welterweight division, like Judah and maybe Cotto. If he goes down he can probably just unify that division again, fighting guys like Malignaggi, Torres and perhaps so lightweights moving up like Juan Diaz.

Hatton - if he's willing to fight Cotto or Delahoya next

Mayweather - if he's willing to fight Cotto next.

true...paul williams is one tall mofo.

          6'2 and a southpaw.

i've said it before and will agree again...williams would give problems to anyone...the height alone...6'2...floyd is what? 5'7 or 5'8? forgot...

either way williams has all the clear advantages.

i just dont think floyd will fight him in the remaining of his career unless williams is knocking on the doorstep like cotto is now (after the win over mosley securing a spot as number 1 contender).

i think all 5 fighters i mentioned wouldnt be exactly easy...

          spinks: the slick southpaw
Malignaggi: a very good boxer with good speed on him who isnt afraid to mix it up even with a lack of punching power...and you know he has heart and a hell of a chin (cotto knocked him down but not out...)
hatton: balls out relentless brawling...good body punching...fast hands...decent power
cotto: one of the most powerful welterweights at the moment with decent boxing skills, a great body puncher (better than hatton) and a ton of heart.
williams: as you said; 6'2; southpaw, quick hands and never stops punching.

they all have a good chance...

A Hatton win would be better for the simple fact that he is not a natural welterweight and isnt ****** enough to stay there, so he will vacate and move back down. This opens the door for the rest of the extremely impressive welterweight stable to get it on and we may even get one guy holding all the belts and taking on all comers.

A Floyd win would be bad because he would point blank refuse to fight Cotto and probably retire, but in doing so would tie up the WBC belt for a long time before he was stripped, meaning that the most prestigious title is sat on someones shelf gathering dust instead of being up for grabs in the kind of bouts the welterweight division is crying out for.

It is also bad to have a champion who is scared to fight the best, what kind of example does that set for aspiring young boxers:

"Beat a few decent people and handpick your bum of the month club till you retire"

Welter is where its at right now, no doubt, and with regards to the future entertainment provided by this division, Hatton HAS to win.

If hatton wins its for sure he'll fight de la hoya because dlh wants this fight as well, if mayweather wins he'd be facing cotto.
