    Joe Calzaghe Nearly Derailed

In a fight where Joe Calzaghe (38-0-30K) was booked by most to win in devestating fashion, he failed to impress even the most loyal Calzaghe fans. Little known Karbary Salem (23-4-12K) put Joe through the toughest fight of his career. Given the fact that Salem lost his last fight by decision to Mario Veit and had prior losses to Antwun Echols and future light heavyweight Eric Harding, no expert really gave him a shot to do much in this fight.

The only man to believe that Salem had a shot to win the fight was probably Karbary Salem. Salem came out throwing powr shots in this and was apparent from the first round that he was not going to back down from Joe. There was a clash of heads in round two that opened up a serious cut on the head of Joe Calzaghe. Calzaghe was dropped to the canvas for the second time in his career in the fourth round when he was tagged by a Salem right hand. [details]

Going by what most people who watched the Salem-Veit fight, Salem was robbed. So Joe took Salem on instead of Veit. He could have taken on Veit, but he didn't. Had he, he could have had an easy time of it. Kudos to Joe-- even with that off night vs. Salem.

Kudos to joe - for what fighting another bum, he looked garbage!
He needs to get to 175 and stop whinging about making weight and prove himself at the new weight (if he can)

Twas just a choice between two bums. The kudos was not on his performance. Twas for facing Salem instead of Veit. Check the premise of the post, if you will. Joe himself, per Rick's report, was disatisified with the job he did. I didn't see the fight, I'll take Joe's word for it.

Again, the praise was for taking on Salem instead of Veit. Joe said he would right after the Salem-Veit fight. He kept his word. Not too many do these days.

Maybe if he did what he said last year and stepped up he could of fought a contender at 175, he only 'kept his word' cos he thought it was a very easy nights work and another easy payday. If he was going to be the ultimate gentleman he could of vacated the paper title let salem fight for it against who ever and fought a name at light heavy

Joe needs to move up for sure, what i dont understand is why he seems to have spent the last few years moaining about a lack of competition, when in that time surely he could have been having some unification fights etc and exploiting the weakness of all the other super middle champs. Then he could have made a much bigger name for himself than he has

Joe Calzaghe's talented and his fights are always entertaining to watch. Though his skills are not A-class, but he's got speed and a heart of a warrior. He should be let loose by his handlers who's been protecting him for too long, he should've long fought Tarver and Hopkins. He should step up the plate now and fight Left Hook Lacy and the Green Machine!
