"Cruiserweight John Battle is a 40 years old boxer with 14-18 record. A loser in nine of his last eleven bouts, he was stopped in five of those contests. His two wins in that span were over one guy with sixty losses (yes, s-i-x-t-y)and another guy with twenty-four losses.
He's going up against a local boxer, Connecticut heavyweight Tony Grano, this Saturday at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino over in Ledyard, Connecticut. Fine. Grano barely -and controversially- defeated an "opponent" in his last fight and now more than ever his people are leery about putting him in with someone with skills or youth or a winning record against decent opposition on their side. Fine again. But this fight is accepted for an undercard at one of the biggest casinos in the world? The level of opposition Grano is in with here is the same level the so called "tough commission" across town at the Mohegan Sun have been allowing him to fight ever since he turned pro. The Connecticut boxer appears to talk a good -if somewhat delusional- game but his backers apparently do not see fit to test him or his "skills" in any way whatsoever this time or any other time for that matter. Almost losing to a boxer they clearly assumed was ripe for the picking has seemingly sent them back into super careful mode and while that is lovely for the boxer's hometown fans it is quite the contrary for Nutmeg state boxing fans who are force fed this type of mockery every time the self proclaimed "feared boxer" enters the ring on state soil.
Is there any doubts in anyone's mind that were Grano not an over protected white heavyweight who draws loads of unsuspecting, barely knowledgeable, boxing fans to his fights that he would have already been forced to face the same level of competition that everyone else has? You want to put him in with a bunch of guys you know he can beat, guys that are well past retirement age, guys that are obviously coming for the money? Guys that come in to the ring with oversized bellies, tennis shoes, and basketball shorts? Fine again. Build him up the way every fighter in the world gets built up on for part of his early pro career. But do that on shows up in Massachusetts or Vermont or down in North Carolina or Tennessee on off-TV shows where the average tickets costs 15 bucks and the ring card girls are on a night off from Hooters.
Putting this drivel on Gary Shaw level shows at the biggest casino in the world??
This, gentleman, is out and out fraud and a terrible waste of space on an otherwise topflight professional boxing card."
