Mayweather wins decision to keep WBC title
By Tim Dahlberg, AP Boxing Writer
LAS VEGAS — Once again, Floyd Mayweather Jr. won the fight but not the fans. Mayweather refused to mix it up Saturday night with Jose Luis Castillo, a strategy that allowed him to keep his WBC lightweight title but drew boos from fans wanting some more action. Floyd Mayweather lands a left on Jose Luis Castillo during their WBC lightweight title fight.
                By Laura Rauch, AP

Mayweather did just enough to win, using his jab and right leads to keep Castillo off balance and moving quickly away when the Mexican challenger tried to turn the fight into a slugging match.

The fight was pretty much a carbon copy of Mayweather's disputed win in April over Castillo, and the fans responded just as they did then in booing the petulant champion.

"I feel like everybody is against Floyd Mayweather," Mayweather said. "I don't get any respect."

He certainly didn't from Castillo, who kept pressing the fight from the opening bell but was unable to keep Mayweather in one place long enough to cause any damage.

There were no knockdowns and no notable exchanges in the fight, which Mayweather won 115-113 on two scorecards and 116-113 on a third. The Associated Press had Mayweather winning 116-112.

The fight was the co-main event on the card with heavyweights Wladimir Klitschko and Jameel McCline.

It was only Mayweather's second fight as a lightweight, and followed a week in which he refused to appear at a pre-fight press conference because he thought he wasn't being treated well enough.

He had his way against Castillo (46-6-1) through the early part of the fight, but Castillo came on as he did in the first fight to make it closer in the end.

Castillo was bleeding from the nose and had a mark over his right eye, but never appeared hurt.

Mayweather (29-0) actually ended the fight on the canvas, the result of a slip in the final seconds.

Compubox statistics showed Castillo landed 137 of 604 punches, a measure of Mayweather's elusiveness. Mayweather threw 399 punches and landed 162.

"I told you it would be easier this time," Mayweather said. "My plan was to box more, no power shots, be smart."

The early rounds were a carbon copy of the first fight, with Mayweather landing a jab or a right hand lead, then darting quickly out of the way before Castillo could respond.

Still, Castillo began to frustrate Mayweather as the rounds went on, grabbing him and trying to push Mayweather against the ropes. Castillo was warned in the third round for holding Mayweather with one hand and hitting him with the other, and Mayweather angrily said something to Castillo after he did it again in the fifth round.

Castillo was a 3-1 underdog even though he was competitive in the first fight, winning many of the late rounds but losing a unanimous decision.

That was Mayweather's first fight at 135 pounds and he won the WBC lightweight title from Castillo. But he appeared to be the smaller fighter that night and again in the rematch.

Mayweather weighed 134 pounds to 135 for Castillo at Friday's weigh-in, but just before the fight Mayweather weighed 138 pounds in his dressing room to 147 for the Mexican challenger.

Mayweather earned $2.4 million for the title defense, while Castillo was paid $150,000 plus a percentage of Mexican television proceeds.
