I have nobody to spar with. And won't.
My trainer has never boxed in his life and is only doing his community service hours
The only other trainer there works exclusively with lightweights.. I'm 5'9 230 pounds in decent shape so I don't exactly fit the style they're used to (punching without power and focusing more on points and footwork instead of KOs or knockdowns)
With my structure I'm a big fan of the peek-a-boo style, which they seem to think is ******. I'm not saying everything they do is worthless, but the stuff that is more correct and/or useful, I can do those drills on my own.
Furthermore, the gym is only open 2-3x a week for an hour or so
Now, to be fair, they have taught me how to throw the different punches correctly and put combos together. But with the majority of the people there being between 7 and 15 years old, with ONE other person being 18, I don't feel it's the best place for me to be
At this point, would it be a horrible idea to get a heavy bag, speed bag, mirrors, -video camera- and other essentials and learn combos and movement on my own and analyzing my training later in the evening? I feel I'd progress a lot faster.. and possibly further.
I'd still practice with the bite-size guys and get there when I can find somebody willing to spar, and they'd set up fights for me.
And no, there isn't another gym within a couple hours from here
