I was tempted to say Joe Louis, but I think that his D is not super-solid.
What about Holmes?
Tyson was really sound, too, but very "specific" (basically I mean he never faced anyone shorter than he was)

I was goin to add in Archie Moore...but both Tunney/Moore spent most of there careers at LHW.

exactly, Tunney is such a tempting pick, but he fought a grand total of 3 HW title fights if I am not mistaken

C'mon, Tyson, really? Joe was techinically sound offensively not defensively. Archie Moore, Buster Mathis. Jimmy Ellis, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis (when he wanted to be).
