What's Wrong With Being a Businessman in Boxing?

I don't see anything wrong with picking fights to make the most money for yourself. These guys are putting their health on the line everytime they step in the ring, so of course they should be looking to make the most money with the least amount of risk. If we want to see the best fight the best, we as fans have to be willing to spend money to make these fights lucrative for the fighters.

This is the reason Mayweather would take the risk to fight DLH in a division he doesn't belong in, but won't waste his time with a guy like Margarito who many people don't even know. This is why Mayweather will fight Hatton next and not fight Cotto. This is a sport, but it is also a business.

I have no problem with boxers looking to make as much money as they can from the sport. It is a short career and they have a responsibility to themselves and their families to make as much as they can.

      for the fighters, it's fine

for the fans, it can suck.

but not always. ray robinson was a businessman, but he fought very often and against most of the top fighters around him.

Absolutely nothing. However, fighting for the most money can be counter productive in establishing legacy. Its all about what the fighter hopes to achieve in his career. Unfortunately, it seems like heavyweights are the only ones that can do it at the same time.

Yes I agree... But if you are ONLY chasing the money fights.. Dont tell me you are The GOAT... The Fights that make you the GOAT aren't always against Guys who have The marketable name...

You don't get it do you?... It's the Hypocracy that people cant stand...

Thats because Ray Robinson and all those guys before and many after him were fighting on a different pay scale.

Absolutely right. They had to fight often.

I look at old tapes a lot and there were so many boxers back then and each was willing to do what ever it takes to make it to the top.
If that meant getting knocked down 10 times and fighting once or twice a month then that's what they did.

But the new gladiators are now business men and the Bwanas don't like that

If fighting for the money is what your in the game for....cool. But dont say that your the best in the buisness, when in fact you avoided some threatening challenges in order to chase a less threatening/money fight.

Theres nothing wrong with being a businessman. but if you're constantly choosing the safest opponent, then there is something wrong with calling yourself the #1 p4p fighter.
