    Vazquez-Marquez update

2007 has been a tremendous rollercoaster ride for WBC Super Bantamweight champion Israel “Magnifico” Vazquez. After losing his title in March in a brutal confrontation with Rafael Marquez, the boxing public doubted his ability to regain his crown and status as one of the lighter weight division’s elite.

Those who witnessed it at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California pegged Vazquez vs. Marquez I as an early runner up for fight of the year.

Fast forward five months later and to a different venue in Hidalgo, Texas. Vazquez and Marquez put on a display of bravery and intense back and forth action that eclipsed their first meeting. Showtime televised and gained kudos from the boxing public.

“People didn’t understand why I wanted the rematch so soon after such a hard fight,” said Vazquez. “I couldn’t stand not being a champion. I wanted my title back as soon as possible.”

The rematch resulted in one of the most memorable fights of 2007. The World Boxing Hall of Fame proclaimed it the fight of the year. “We we’re given the honor at the hall of fame induction ceremony,” Vazquez said. “I was touched by the acknowledgement. There’s nothing better than others in the boxing industry recognizing your achievements.”

The suits at Showtime also recognized the value of the Vazquez-Marquez rivalry and are intent on putting on Vazquez vs. Marquez III in March.

“These are two fighters that are on just about everyone’s pound for pound list,” said Vazquez’s manager Frank Espinoza. “That makes them truly elite fighters. It’s rare that you see fights between two pound for pound fighters during their prime. That’s why this particular rivalry is so important and popular with fans. These are the truest warriors in boxing.”

Although Mexico City is being considered as a home venue for the fight, the location is far from being set. “Right now I don’t know where the third fight with Rafa stands,” said Vazquez. “We’re waiting to hear from our promoters at Sycuan and Golden Boy.”

The pressure is on to make the fight happen.

As reported by *********.com, the World Boxing Council has determined that Marquez’s promoter Gary Shaw needs to produce signed contracts by next week in order to secure the fight and the sanctioning body’s blessing. Otherwise, Vazquez will be required to face mandatory Thai challenger Naphapol Kiattisakchokchai who won the right to fight him by defeating Saenghirin Singwancha.

Having to face anyone else than Rafael Marquez would be a disappointment. “I’m confident that our promoters at Sycuan and Golden Boy will make it happen,” Vazquez stated. “It’s the fight the whole world wants to see. It’s the ultimate trilogy.”
