Controversial trainer Floyd “Pretty Daddy” Mayweather is like a man stranded on an island when it comes to assessing the ring skills of Manny Pacquaio. The father of undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr., though, is nothing if not consistent in how he low marks the Pacman.
The poetry-spouting trainer did it again in my conversation with him Wednesday at the final Joan Guzman-Humberto Soto press conference in Manhattan. Mayweather trains the unbeaten Guzman.
Once again, Mayweather labeled Megamanny as a one-dimensional boxing robot. And he repeated his promise that Guzman will be the man to bring Pacman down.
“Is he one dimensional, yes he is,” Mayweather said. “All the Pacman can do is punch, nothing else. He’s got no real skills. He’s with Joke Coach (Freddie) Roach and he can’t show Manny nothing. What Freddie Roach is doing with Pacquiao is what you can do with Pacman, what any guy off the street can do with and for Pacquiao. Roach can’t teach what he don’t know.”
What the boxing world does know is that there is an ongoing feud between Mayweather Sr. and Roach which accelerated when Floyd Senior’s astronomical salary demands to train Oscar de la Hoya to fight his son were spurned by Oscar. Roach stepped into the breach and earned a nice sum to take over in Oscar’s camp but Floyd Jr. easily outpointed the Golden Boy.
It seems likely that Roach will train Oscar for his May 3, 2008, bout against a carefully-vetted opponent.
