Chavez won his first title at 43 - 0 when he fought for his first world title against Azabache Martinez. Martinez was acctually favored in that fight because he had Ko'd the current champ Rolando Navarete in a non-title fight.
By the time Chavez was 60 - 0 he had already defended the Jr lightweight title 9 times, and won the lightweight title.
By 60 fights Chavez had already beat these guys
Mario Martinez
Ruben Castillo
Roger Mayweather - future champ
Rocky Lockridge - Ex Champ
Juan La Porte - Ex Champ
Edwin Rosario - Current Champ
Rafael Limon - Ex Champ
Chavez reportedly had like 10 Amature fights.Comment

Mexicans have 'padded' records because their early professional career is their version of an amateur career. They need MONEY, and amateur doesnt pay. they need to gain the skills, but support their family.
and it doesnt matter how many 'nobodies' someone fights, its how good a fighter they were. Im pretty sure that Chavez has the record number of title fights, and has faced more than a few HOF fighters, and had beaten the best from all parts of the globe.
If people actually want to dissect his career, its pretty amazing. but usually, people think 'he was given a gift against Whitaker' and 'he should have lost to Taylor' and dismiss him as a nobody. what people fail to realize is that there are very few people EVER that could have beat Whitaker or Taylor. hes not the best of all time, but hes got an amazing career.Comment

Yes Chavez holds both records for most succesfull title defenses 27
Also the Record for most Title fights 37, not bad for someone who only fought bums.Comment
