Would SRL be the GOAT if had...

Beaten Duran at lightweight (in their first fight) and retired after beating Hagler?

He would have retired 36-0, and have beaten the supposive best lightweight and best middleweight ever.

    Thoughts?

The first Leonard vs Duran fight was at Welterweight Leonard was never at Lightweight but had Leonard fought his normal style in there first fight instead of getting lured into a brawl he would of won imo and had he retired after beating Hagler he would be well up there probably top 10.

            Oops. You are right.

Well say he had beaten Duran at lightweight.

You all still think he would be barely top 10?

SRL is my favorite fighter of all time, but yes he easily beats Duran in Montreal had he boxed. But he didnt and we have to factor in that he let Duran come up and out fight him, which (yes Leonard did not fight his style on purpose, but he still lost) has to be a thing to consider. Also, I have Ray's resume up there with the all time best, but even I have to weight in that when comparing to Robinson, Ali Two fighters that had Resume's equal to or better than Leonard, and longer career's..more defenses..Robinson 100 fights...wow...Ali dominated two decades of the best Heavy weight fighrters,,and especially the 70's when there were great heavyweights, and Ali beat them all except for when he was 40.

So Yes Ray has the resume, but when he is compared to Robinson Ali and there are some others that have the resume and the longitivy + defenses, you have to put that above Ray. I have Ray a solid top 10.

                No.
36-0 doesnt equal GOAT. And his later achievements and loses doesnt take away from his great wins either.

lol. Just say u meant welterweight instead of lightweight.

If Leonard had won the first fight with Duran and then retired at 36-0 i still would rate SRR and Ali higher.

Ali was a big underdog with both Liston and Foreman and he stopped them both. For me overcoming such odds counts for much more than remaing unbeaten.
