Shane Mosley was hitting Cotto with rights at will.
Appeared as if cotto had no defense for those right hands
At the same time cotto was landing left hooks at will.
he would land 2-3 of them in nearly any given combination.
The first round looked great for both fighters overall they were trading punches the entire round and i couldnt have imagined it going 12 rounds...even before the fight i said it wouldnt go 12 rounds but to my pleasant surprise it did.
After the first couple of rounds when all the tension began to settle the fight looked like i expected...mosley was boxing and using aggressive counterpunching and miguel cotto didnt know how to take a step back.
as the fight wore on and cotto's lip got cut on the inside i seriously thought he was in big trouble and could possibly get knocked down.
at first i wasnt sure what happened due to the fact it didnt appear mosley hit him with any specific combination or punch that made him so weary.
later on we get conformation that it was a cut on the inside of the lip and it makes perfect sense to be weary of taking more punches however i didnt see cotto get rocked too badly at all during the fight.
i seen both fighters buzzed/stunned on several occassions but i didnt really see anything extreme (no leg buckling or whobbling) and it shows me cotto's chin isnt as suspect as i originally thought (especially with mosley who is a powerful puncher not being able to whobble him)
both fighters showed an amazing amount of heart and i believe overall there were no real losers in the fight.
the biggest surpise to me (and to many of the cotto haters) was seeing cotto box.
i didnt foresee that and i wouldnt expect him to do such a good job either.
he was slipping punches, rolling punches, and dancing right around the ring and mosley kept chasing and cotto was pretty effective with the counterpunching.
it was a very pleasant surprise and should dissprove SOME thoughts that cotto is a one dimensional style fighter.
cotto matched mosleys hand speed...something else i didnt foresee.
Mosley had a great fight as well...
he proved he still has tons to offer in the sport and can see him still being a dominant force in the welterweight division for maybe another 2 (maybe 3) years.
Had shane been in his prime i say he beats cotto.
shane proved his spirit/will cannot be broken and he showed a ton of heart and in my opinion he has nothing to not be proud of. shane also did a great job of neutralizing cotto's body punches and even did a great job of using body punches...
i would definately pay to see it again.
both had great strategy's and it just seems as if mosley is past his prime and he does the best he can.
this (in my book) is the 2nd best fight of year...especially when it comes to strategy...i dont think many (if anyone) predicited to see cotto actually box and for him to land left hooks at will...or predict to see shane land right hands at will and mount a great comeback down the stretch that was just short of victory.
i didnt officially score the fight and believed it was extremely close and wouldnt have argued a 115-113 win for EITHER fighter nor would i dispute a draw...there were some really tough rounds to score...for the record i believe i seen about 2-3 rounds exactly even...it was that close...
mosley used 99 more punches in the fight and thats the main difference...overall they landed the EXACT same amount of punches...so in the end it comes down to which style did you like better...
no matter who won in the eyes of the fans i will say it would have been a split decision...a UD for EITHER fighter is unfair.
but you must remember there were some inexperienced judges...
with the right judges you would have had in infamous 2 to 1 115-113 score or a draw...
i think the vegas sports books had it absolutely right...(having the odds about even)...it was as close to an even fight (in my opinion) as you can get without having an even decision.
This does do more for boxing however in the sense cotto (being in his prime or right about in it) would have a better chance to beat either mayweather or hatton than shane would (due to the fact he's out of his prime and he would tire in the later rounds).
im not saying cotto will beat either of those fighters but i admit he does have a better chance...
cotto/hatton
cotto/mayweather
either of these would be great fights...
cotto v. hatton was probably the more exciting fight BEFORE the cotto/mosley fight for me and many others (due to the fact most of were thinking it would be all action like diaz v. diaz earlier this year) however (for me) cotto/mayweather would be more exciting.
now that i seen cotto box it would be interesting how he would fight mayweather...
would have been even better if he sprung it on mayweather DURING their fight...instead of just giving him something to think about.
cotto's chin isnt THEE strongest but fighting mayweather i dont think he has any power to fear...
now mayweather cannot say, "who's cotto?"...
because cotto has just beaten on the of the best fighters of this generation...even though its not as authentic as if he beat him in his prime...
mosley fought a great fight though and i like both fighters so much im just glad it was competitive.
