Which fight would you rather see happen? (Plus article)

I wrote this on wednesday while taking a class at the University, but hadn't posted it since I hadn't exactly finished it. My take on the match-ups that would make boxing big in 2008...even though we just witnessed one of the big fights yesterday last night.

Cotto/Mayweather-Although there is a lot of talk about Mayweather not wanting to fight Cotto, whether it be that Floyd’s not really interested or due to his disliking towards Arum, a fight of this magnitude would be an interesting match-up between 2 big welterweights, assuming Mayweather defeats Hatton, a power puncher who strikes to the body. It would mean that people would start to believe that Mayweather could decision Cotto, who has a similar style to Hatton and most likely to lead to a decision in favor of Mayweather, which is the most possible path to victory for “Pretty Boy” Floyd if he should beat Hatton. He would remain undefeated, defeating another undefeated champion, and then go on to face another tough opponent netting him millions more in another Pay-Per-View fight.
Cotto, on the other hand would mean defeating Mosley, who is currently believed to be THE boxer that can defeat Floyd Mayweather. It is said that Mosley is nearly everything that Mayweather is, with the exception that he has more power. Theoretically, Cotto defeating Mosley would lead people to believe, contrary to Mayweather’s victory factors, that he could defeat Floyd. It would be absolutely shocking to see Mosley knocked out and it would further solidify the belief that not only will Floyd be defeated, but instead knocked out.
However, nothing is ever certain especially in boxing. One can be winning a fight only to be knocked out in a single punch: Tiger/Foster, Walcott/Marciano, etc. It’s also mere speculation that if Cotto beats Mosley, he’ll beat Mayweather. In boxing, the “A>B>C, therefore A>C” doesn’t necessarily work. Let’s take a look at 3 big former heavyweight champions: Frazier, Foreman, Ali. First, Frazier defeated Ali, Foreman defeated Frazier and Ali defeated Foreman. Just because one beats the other doesn’t mean one is absolutely inferior. Secondly, we wouldn’t be able to apply this theory even if it were true (A>B>C, therefore A>C) since Floyd hasn’t fought either.
The reason I emphasize this is because boxing is a lot of theory.

Mayorga (x2)>Forrest>Mosley, therefore Mayorga>Mosley (not likely)

    Frazier>Ali>Foreman, therefore Frazier>Foreman (FALSE)

Of course, we know that now since these 3 fought each other. Again, I reiterate, Cotto/Mayweather would certainly be a humongous fight. It would surely sell-out Madison Square Garden, bring 2 undefeated champions together.
For Cotto, a shot to gain other titles against the pound-for-pound number one ranked fighter and long reigning champion. If victorious, he would become an instant celebrity and an icon in Puerto Rico.
For Mayweather, further respect from praisers and newfound faith from those who never believed. He would then only have to deal with a couple more contenders to be undeniably respected, but in my opinion he is a tremendous boxer already.

Cotto/Hatton- Now this is sure to be a barn-burner as well. Just as the Cotto/Mayweather possibility, it would bring two undefeated champions together. Cotto may not be well-known in England, buy by this stage it is my belief that England would be tuning in to watch stateside fights and ponder who Ricky’s next opponent would be. Once Cotto is confirmed, the fight would sell itself based on the fact that USA would tune in to watch, as this would be a big fight in the country where boxing has a long history of popularity. Puertorricans are rabid crowds and it would sell-out Madison Square Garden, but given the fact that Cotto’s done it so many times there, would the allure for more money be used by Brits in order to have Ricky Hatton fighting back in England, now as a bigger champ alongside Calzaghe? Would puertorricans flock to England in order to watch their champ fight in hostile territory? Regardless of the venue, we would have 3 races undoubtedly tuning in to watch (and there would be a major turnout from Brits and Puertorricans as they are very rabid fan bases).
Stylistically, there’s not much variation. But it wouldn’t be a boring fight, not by a long shot. The fight would pit two aggressors against each other, both favoring heavy shots to the body. It would probably be what Castillo-Hatton was supposed to be: an action-packed, drama-saturated fight with back and forth shots between both. The fight could gain just as much, if not more, attention than Mayweather/Hatton based on the fact that they very much beloved by their respective countries and their styles, more often that not, is based on power-punching. It would be an amazing fight that both sides would anticipate!

Mayweather/Mosley- Another match-up that fans of boxing and further proof that any way you stack it up, boxing fans will be treated to some sort of superfight in 2008. It wouldn’t be big in Britain, nor in Puerto Rico. But among American boxing fans, the fight would generate a large amount of revenue. With the gunslingers cast aside, we would be looking forward to an upcoming fight between two fast, technical boxers.
Mosley, coming off from a 9 month lay-off after defeating Luis Collazo, defeats a prime undefeated Cotto 9 years his junior. The next logical step? Target the winner of Mayweather/Hatton. What could we be expecting from this fight? In all honesty, Shane Mosley would have a very good chance of dethroning Mayweather who might, most likely, defeat Hatton unsurprisingly. The fight has long been talked about among fans and Mayweather haters would love to see how Mayweather handles the experienced veteran who, believed to be over-the-hill, managed to defeat a young lion and take his best shots. This wouldn’t be a fight based on pure hype, a fight that’s touted as big when in reality there isn’t anything to gain or lose (i.e: Trinidad/Jones, Vargas/Mayorga, etc. What is there to win or lose?
Mosley- dethroner of the best pound for pound champion. It would be interesting the fact that a former pound-for-pound fighter, now in his final years, defeating a man deemed to be the very technical and invincible. Shane Mosley would benefit from this win much more than Cotto would. Cotto would become much more proven as a champion, whereas Shane would most likely enter the closed circle of all-time greats after winning 2 consecutive fights against 2 undefeated champions younger than he is while Shane remains past his prime. There would be so much to gain for Mosley at this point.
Floyd- after defeating Britain’s star, people would still probably be questioning Floyd’s talents for some reason. His decision to pick Hatton over other (supposedly) better fighters would not permit him to be able to rule undoubtedly the division. Enter Shane Mosley, and now Floyd would face a future hall-of-famer, though past his prime, would still be considered a legitimate threat after shooting down Cotto. Floyd would have a real test in front of him and a fight of speed would be in the making. Floyd would not have much to lose, as this would only be his first loss in a 39-0 record (assuming he beats Hatton). However, for such a little risk fight, the rewards are enormous. He beats Shane Mosley, who many want to see against Floyd and defeats him after putting down undefeated Hatton. Floyd would absolutely be up there with the all-time greats, and he is currently on the fast-track to becoming one regardless of what excuses are made.

Mosley/Hatton- Here is a fight, that all of the previous four, have the least potential to garner attention. While Mosley proves he can go up against a power puncher like Cotto and Hatton proves he can beat boxing’s best boxer (a speedy, technical one), the big draw in this fight would be Hatton, who would come in undefeated against a man, though not as quick as Floyd, but slightly more powerful. No doubt that this would be a fight for England as they would all tune in to follow their champion’s path, but I personally think however, that only Shane has something to win here while Hatton would personally be better off fighting better contenders.
Shane Mosley, as in the other fight possibilites, gains all-time great status, but for some reason wouldn’t be respected that much as Mayweather defenders would be clamoring for a rematch between him and Hatton. Shane could retire at this point, with 2 straight wins against two powerful punchers, taking his lumps like a man, and pulling out the convincing decision (or KO) against them. It would be the perfect time to end a fascinating career.
Hatton, after defeating Floyd Mayweather (if he beats him most likely be KO) would mean he is the pound-for-pound fighter at this point and time. Depending on the pay-per-view sales (and the outcome of the fight), a rematch would probably be in the contract. However, since Floyd’s probably not expecting to really lose, that is probably out of the question. Whether Hatton gives him a rematch or not, it’s up to him. But if Hatton picks Mosley as his next opponent, I seriously don’t see how the fight would sell well from the Western standpoint. There is no question that it would be big in Britain after coming off a win against the “Pretty Boy”, but Hatton would no longer need to prove himself as fighter in the eyes of many spectators. He could now take on Paul Williams or Antonio Margarito, two fights that promise to be interesting with Paul’s unyielding jab and Margarito’s all-out style. For Hatton to fight Mosley, would just mean we would have to wonder whether or not Hatton would face the same fate as Cotto in this hypothetical situation. A win for Hatton? Well, it would mean that his sheer force and unrelenting style is enough to not let anyone escape from his grasp…Mayweather, Mosley…where would Hatton go from here?

Cotto/Mayweather better happen. It may just be for all the belts if one of the two face the innwer or Cintron-Williams, let's make it happen and it would be two undefeated champions to unify the entire division.

Cotto/Hatton seems the most probable...but for some reason I'm rooting for Mayweather to win. I would really enjoy Mayweather/Cotto.
