Joe Calzaghe: Shoulda Been A Great

I was wrong. There is no other way to put it. I have been wrong before, and I will be wrong again, but I don't know if I've ever been this wrong. Usually in boxing I can find a reason to explain why I ended up being wrong, an excuse if you will. Not after that fight. I was just simply blind to the fact that Joe C from Wales is one of the most talented fighters of his generation. Kessler showed up and fought his usually solid fight, but it didn't matter.

Yet, I can't help but feel let down by this true birth of a superstar. He is 35 years old. His defenses of his favorite world title trinket number out of the teens. Why, oh why Joe, didn't this already happen? You don't peak at 35. You can succeed at 35. You can understand the game the best, and perhaps even give your best performances at 35, but you don't physically peak at 35. In fact, the Calzaghe that just pushed into the front of the scene is physically deteriorating as all men do when they are 35.

Where have you been Joe? If you can do this, and you obviously can, why have I not been treated to at least five years of super fights airing from Wales? I suspect that Frank Warren is very much the reason for this, but that is irrelevant as I don't really care to place the blame. I just can't help it. I feel saddened by the birth of a boxing box office hit. That just ain't right.

Numerous factors. Overprotective management, lack of big name options and a spectacularly messy and destructive divorce which made him look a bum between the Mitchell and Veit II fights.

He's at his peak now anyway. Not his physical peak (in fact the signs are there that he's not getting any younger) but his boxing peak. The Calzaghe of now beats any previous version and pretty much anyone out there.

He's made a fan out of me, for sure. Especially during the 6th round when he shifted into pure boxing. It was beautiful to watch.
