    Calzaghe will be no. 1

Joe Calzaghe can claim to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world when he beats Mikkel Kessler, according to Frank Warren.

Warren says the No.1 crown will be up for grabs as well as the undisputed world supermiddleweight championship when WBO king Calzaghe and Kessler, the WBC and WBA holder, clash tomorrow.

"Not only will we find out who's the best supermiddleweight in the world, we'll also see who's the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," said Calzaghe's promoter at yesterday's head-to-head in Cardiff.

"I don't understand how some people make Floyd Mayweather No.1. I'm not a big Floyd Mayweather fan and I prefer fighters who are at the top of their division.

"There's no catchweight contest here with Joe and Kessler. This is their natural weight. It's not like Mayweather stepping up a weight to fight Oscar De La Hoya.

"They are the two best guys out there so I think the winner of this has got to be one of the best, if not the best, fighter in the world." Around 50,000 fans will pack into the Millennium Stadium and Warren insisted: "This is just as big as Ricky Hatton's fight with Mayweather in Las Vegas next month.

"They will have a live crowd of 15,000. The atmosphere in Cardiff will be four times better."

Joe Calazaghe v Mikkel Kessler tomorrow night, exclusively live on Setanta Sports 1. Coverage starts at 8.15pm.

That's a nice little extra promotional tool, though I don't think it's true. I wouldn't worry myself over it, either.

Hey promotion is promotion and the winner should be near the top of the p4p list.

Not a fan of the pound for pound list as it may be the most subjective system of ranking athletes ever. Does it really mean anything?

But having said that, if Calzaghe wins his fight I guess he has as good of a claim on being #1 on it as anyone else.

I think they will be, Calzaghe certainly will be, purely because he has the long career and name to sit beside it. However if Mayweather beats Hatton then he will sit back on the top.

This is true. I guess in terms of money it could be meaningful for a fighter.

I'd be surprised to see Kessler higher than #5 p4p when he wins. Then again, I'd also be surprised if he doesn't climb the list further later on.

I didn't say the TOP of the list I said NEAR the top, as in the 3rd or fourth slot.
