Margarito: "Maybe I Should Have Gone Straight to Cotto"

From the conference call to promote his fight with Golden Johnson:

Question: You chose Paul Williams over the Cotto fight before. What was your reason at that time?

Margarito: Well, the main factor for me was the title. I earned my title in the ring and I didn’t want to lose it like that. I had to fight this guy with my mandatory and I know I had to fight him to keep my title.

And maybe I should have gone straight to Cotto. There’s nothing I can do about it now.

I was very confident I could beat Paul Williams. Things didn’t turn out the way I had hoped. But I’m right back in track so I’m looking forward to this fight and then fighting the winner and maybe Paul Williams down the road.

No maybee to it. He should have fought Cotto. Better styles match up and a bigger fight.

Cotto is a few levels above Rocky "the Taco" Balboa.... He doesn't want Cotto, he wants a paycheck for getting yoked.

He's man enough to admit that he could see Williams winning the fight even after his post fight reactions. Few fighters are humble enough to change their minds publicly like that. This guy is a humble fighter who makes exciting fights and will give any of the top welterweights in the world a hell of a fight, I wish the toe to toe guy would stop turning people off from him and people could appreciate his style and admit he has some merit to where he is today.

that's never going to happen margairto dosen't have any title he is not even on the top 10 wba contenders i guess he needs to look (if he wins in nov 10) for the winner of williams and cintron which i doubt he could beat them now.

let margarito face berto or quintana that would be pretty good.

im sorry dude, he acted like a ****ing ******* after that fight, that wasnt humility at all, he didint give credit where credit was due, he didint rise to the occasion in the 12th round and its the story of his ****ing career, when he had his shot, he loses it for whatever reason and has every excuse in the world as to why he should be in the position that in reality he hasnt done alot to earn, beating paul williams would have done something for him, instead hes still on cotto undercards.

I agree he was not gracious in defeat, but we've seen that from a lot of fighters. Look at what he's saying now though, he's saying he saw the tapes and he sees how people could see Williams winning the fight and that he started too slow. How many people, not to mention pro fighters, are man enough to say that after claiming they won the fight? Barrera still says he beat marquez but lost to the judges, fighters never admit they may have lost as to not change their minds.
