Which of the current fighters do you think would make a good trainer?

Just a couple off the top my head:

Chris Byrd. He is getting older but has a lot of talent and a history of success. He is also calm and very smart, thus being able to see a fight for what it is without letting his emotions delude him.

James Toney. Yeah, a lot of problems there but don’t let his demeanor throw you off, he knows a lot about the sport. Plus, not only does he know a lot about fighting, he knows a lot about fighting in different weight classes. That would be a huge plus when training boxers in different weight classes.

Although he just retired I think MAB would make a great trainer. He knows boxing and brawling in and out and his knowledge of the sport is vast.

Of course, the logical picks for this topic would be fighters who have had alot of success with their own careers or the one's considered by many who has alot of "ring smarts". But the two attributes I mentioned above doesn't neccessarily equate to being a good coach.

There are alot of examples in other sports where great players couldn't or currently appear they could hack it as coaches, ie Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas, just to name a few.

Usually the good trainers are the one's who weren't so talented or were considered not belonging to the elite class of their generation, their careers were full of uphill battles.

I'm not saying that there aren't any great pro fighters/players who ended up being great coaches as well. From my own personal experience, I've trained under former world champs(muay thai and boxing), former pro-club fighters, and coaches who only had amateur experience as fighters.

let me tell ya, the best coach I've ever had was my first ever boxing coach, he only had 40+ fights as an amateur himself, but the knowledge and the way he held a class was awesome compared to lets say a two-time WBC and IBF champ that I recently trained with a few years ago, who could not articulate what he wanted to see in his fighters, he was way too impatient, his classes were disorganized, I mean, the guy ******. Sure, there were a few things that I learned from the ex-champ that my coach with only an amateur experience never showed me, but overall my amateur coach was heads and shoulders above the coaches who had alot more experience as fighters.

But basing it on which students won more tournaments, and how many more of his students placed first in most tournaments. Hands down, my amateur coach who only had amateur experience himself had the most students who always placed and it usually was first place in tournaments.

The thing i notice about pro-fighters who fought at a pretty high level and were successful, are the ones who expect too much out of their fighters. They don't realize that you can't fit a round peg into a square hole. They expect their fighters to fight like them, when they are not like them.

nigel benn. he is quite famous for some punching power and brawls. i would have thought he would be some angry guy, but in his itnerviews he is very calm, smart and he has some charisma. i mean i don't listen to a lot of famous people but this guy does make soem snese. he would be a good trainer because of good advice and it comes out fast becaus ehe is witty. he is also very calm.

kosta tzyu. got a feeling he would train you hard and teach you what he knows. very spiritual it seems so he would give you a calming feeling in the corner.

hopkins. seems like he knows all the tricks and would teach you everything. although i think he still has a passion to fight.

James Toney seems waaaaay too ****** to train. Chris Byrd works though. Who I thought immediately of when reading the thread title though was Sam Soliman. I'm sure people here have been watching this season of the contender, and he was practically a second trainer on his team already.

Geez, I can already imagine what Oscar would be saying if the fight was getting tough. "Okay, just run around the ring so you won't get hurt"(A strategy he applied against Tito) or "pretend your hurt and don't bother getting up"(A strategy Oscar applied against B-HOP).

Man, I would love Holyfield to be instructing me in-between rounds.
