Joel Casamayor ***** Talk On Diaz And Pacquiao

Joel Casamayor: "I want Pacquiao next!"
    FightFan.com Staff [Exclusive Interview]

FightFan.com caught up with "El Cepillo" Joel Casamayor and the 135-pound Ring champion was not short on words. Read as Casamayor calls out Manny Pacquiao, Juan Diaz, and puts the boxing world on notice that he is the true champion at lightweight. Only on FightFan.com!

    October 18, 2007

FF: Joel thanks for taking the time to talk with the Fight Fans at FightFan.com. I'm going to ask you straight out: with all the talk about Diaz unifying titles, how frustrating is it for people not to be mentioning your name when you are the linear and Ring champ at 135?
JC: It disappoints me because I feel like I haven’t been given the respect for beating such a great fighter in Diego Corrales (may he rest in peace) exactly one year ago this month. He was champion at that time and I beat him. Look, if you speak to anyone who knows boxing they’ll tell you that Joel Casamayor is the best lightweight in the world. All this fuss is being made over Juan Diaz and his empty titles. If the Baby Bit*h wants to be the best, he has to fight the best. He keeps talking about how old I am. Come on son, let daddy give you a lesson!

FF: With that said, tell us how much Juan Diaz's titles mean if he doesn't face you?
JC: Those titles don’t mean ****. They’re 100 per cent worthless in my book. He's beaten two quitters for his titles. Corrales was the champion, and when I beat him I became the champion. I’ve got no respect for Diaz for not wanting to legitimize his so-called titles by fighting me. I’m the best lightweight in the world and I’m honest and don’t hold any punches back when I speak. Diaz has been spoon fed by Don King and hides behind 'old man' Savannah. Savannah had previously talked about recognizing my top ranking, but then lied his ass off about me pulling out of a fight vs. Diaz. That kid is terrified of me. If not, sign the contract. I’ll fight him next after I dispose of Santa Cruz and we can do it on HBO.

FF: It seems like a lot of these guys are quick to write you off as being past your best, but if they think it’s going to be an easy fight for them why not step up to the plate and take the fight?JC: Because they’re scared. They know I’m the true champion at 135 pounds. They know their titles don’t mean anything while in my shadow and they know I have the style to beat them. They don’t want to fight me, but at the end of the day that only underlines how un-champion like they are. My whole career, I was there to take on the best at any given time. That is what elite fighters and champions do. These punks today aren’t interested in doing that.

FF: Joel, if it were up to you, who do you want more at this point: Pacquiao or Juan Diaz? Why?

JC: Pacquiao. I feel he is a better fighter than Diaz. A win over Pacquiao would mean more because baby boy Diaz has never won any big fights. He’s never been in with fighters like me and Pacquiao, and believe me, I would love to show the world how easy I would stop Pacquiao. But if I’m being honest, I think he’s just as afraid of me as Diaz is. Freddie Roach says I’m washed up and I can’t hurt Manny. They need to recognize I’m the best at 135. Manny, you want to move up? I’d be glad to destroy you and prove Roach wrong. But I have a feeling that just like last year, these guys will all run from me. Hopefully Golden Boy Promotions will get me the marquee fights I’ve been waiting for since I became THE champion!

Don’t get me wrong, I would also like to show HBO and the world that their 'baby bull' is a bust and isn’t half the fighter he or Don King thinks he is. Don King ain’t no punk, he knows I’ll turn his little Mexican into Ryan Leaf real quick!

FF: Tell us what you thought about Pacquiao's latest performance?JC: I feel like Barrera just fought to survive and it was a lackluster performance for the Pac-boy. I thought he would run Marco out of the ring. But I do understand it’s hard to fight someone who is trying to survive, and if Marco would have fought a little more, you never know. I think me and the Pac-boy is a great style matchup and I feel like I would dice him up!

FF: What about Juan Diaz' performance over Julio Diaz? What did you think?

JC: He got the ‘W’. I can’t hate on the way the kid looked, but he was supposed to do that with nothing in front of him. That’s the type of performance you’d expect from a B or C level fighter like Julio. I feel Julio went in there and completely fought the wrong fight. He realized that down the stretch and quit. But Juan can’t crack an egg with his power, and his mid-section looks soooo juicy!

FF: Who do you think would win in a fight between Pacquiao and Juan Diaz?

JC: I’m not sure. It’s a good question. I feel like who ever backs up the other one would win because neither can fight going backwards. Both are one-dimensional. But to be honest, I think the baby might be a little bit too big and strong for Pac-boy. I’d have to take Diaz.

FF: If you can't make a fight with either Pacquiao or Diaz, who else would you like to fight?

JC: Mike Katsidis. Everybody is raving about this kid, and young guys like this with the ‘0’ in the loss column get me excited because I love to make that ‘0’ go! But Katsidis is another kid who wants no piece of ‘El Cepillo’. I’ve called him out a couple times and he responds with answers that don’t make sense. He plays the ****** kid role hiding behind his manager. All the little bit*h talks about is fighting all the Diaz’s, yet me and him are under the same banner with Golden Boy. It’s the easiest fight that can be made; he doesn’t have to wait for a title shot. Here’s his chance right now, but he wants NO piece of the best. The kid is a punk. Period!

FF: You’re back in action Saturday Nov. 10 taking on Jose Armando Santa Cruz on the same card as Miguel Cotto vs. Shane Mosley. It's been a while since we've seen you in the ring; do you expect to have some ring rust in this next bout?

JC: You always have a little rust when you haven’t fought in a year, but that’s why I got to camp early and I’m getting a ton of sparring in. So come Nov. 10 when that bell rings all the rust gets left in the gym. I’m also the type of fighter that has no excuses. I am the best at 135 pounds and I have to prove that. It will be good night Santa!

FF: Joel, how much longer do you plan to continue fighting?

JC: As long as God still blesses me with the ability to continue. The way I feel right now it could be another three or fours years no problem. I feel rejuvenated with the year layoff and my body had a lot of rest. I feel like it did my body great. But one thing I have always said is that once I lose my reflexes, I’m done.

FF: Do you have anything to say to your fans who have been waiting to see you in the ring again?

JC: First, I want to thank Ace at FightFan.com, great guy. To all of my fans across the world, I love you guys. Keep supporting and I won’t let you down. Tune in Nov.10 to see the great ‘El Cepillo’ and I promise it’s going to be a great performance. Last but not least, Ace can you tell one of these chumps to step up to the plate and stop running from the REAL CHAMP?

FF: You just told them yourself my man. Thanks for taking the time Joel. We always appreciate catching up with you. We’ll talk again after you win on Nov. 10.
    JC: Thanks guys!

I will bet on that fight if it happens. And I will bet that Juan beats Casamayor. And probably gives him brain damage. I think Casamayor would give pac more problems then Juan. I think Juans constant workrate and combos would give him a decision win.

Very nice interview. It REALLY does seem like everyone is avoiding Casamayor like the plague. Hopefully, he looks good and gives people a reason to avoid him, than when somerone finally steps up, it seems like an even bigger fight. That we'd most likely get free on HBO, regardless. I like how this could turn out.
