Cotto has a long way to go before he reaches the level of a legend like Felix Trinidad. Old man Mosley at 35 years old will be the best opponent he has ever faced. I'm sorry, but I don't consider Judah and elite fighter anymore. Mallignaggi and Quintana are also good fighters, but they are not elite.
Felix Trinidad has beaten the best of the best and he has done it impressively. If Cotto beats Mosley and then Mayweather, I will probably put him up there close to Trinidad.
In terms of resumes.. he'll tie him in my mind. Tito won a VERY disputed fight over De La Hoya, fouled his way to a good fighter in Vargas, and that's pretty much it. Other than that, he fought either fighters who were only pretty decent or faded, some both.
He had, Whitaker, faded.. who still gave him some trouble. He had Camacho, who I never thought much of, and Mayorga, who.. is Mayorga.
Then, his other two BIG fights, he loses, one to Wright that was EXTREMELY lopsided, and one to Hopkins, in which he was outboxed, then knocked out.
Whereas, anytime Cotto steps up, he has shined, thus far. Judah was game in their fight, for whatever reason (lol) but he still lost completely to Cotto. Cotto has a very exciting style of fight as well, so Tito fans can't go with that, either. Cotto CAN box, and isn't too slow, plus has a nice punch. Tito had power over Cotto, but otherwise, in terms of boxing, didn't have much else, not at this point in his career, especially.
A lot rides on this Mosley fight, though. he can have a win over the guy who beat Oscar twice, once deservedly, something that Tito REALLY couldn't do. Cotto then has A LOT of options, as I assume the fight would be very exciting if he could win it. I just see him losing, that's all. POint being if he beats Mosley, fair and impressively, all he'll be doing is adding on to his resume whereas Tito faltered everytime he succeeded towards the end of his career.
In terms of popularity with the Puerto Rican people, he has a HUGE mountain to climb. One, he may never be able to topple, regardless of what he does.
What everybody else said. If he beats Mosley he is on his way to achieving that level of greatness that Tito possessed, but he's still a long way off. He'd need several high profile fights and signature wins to put him in that conversation.
I think Cotto is a special fighter though. Win, loss or draw the guy will always have fans because he comes to fight and gives everything he has every fight.
I prefer him already to trinidad. But it's because i like body punchers. But i find him very charismatique. you xan be charismatique and don't talk much. it's his whole apparence that i like
I agree, his charisma comes from the way he carries himself in and around the ring. Strong willed, ready to fight. No b.s. Mosely is his toughest test to date, if he wins, He can be considerd elite. Then start the mega fights.
