For the last couple of years I've done a "heavyweight report card" as it's traditionally a division I love, and I kind of gave a little write-up of each one.
Yesterday I realised I'd forgotten to do it for 2007... then I realised I'd even forgotten the heavyweights existed.
Wlad, the No.1 of the division scored a KO over an overmatched opponent, then made an out-of-shape guy with no eyes quit. This made him equal Ali's achievements (c. The KayJay Times) but since then he's been forced to lay idle as HBO won't sanction any more bouts this year. Even more disappointingly, his brother's return has been postponed again and again.
The WBC champion has been inactive the entire year... Rustling Chagaev scored a decision over the Giant in a dull fight. James Toney had a rematch with Sam Peter, only to find that the second time round Sam genuinely won. He then fought a journeyman, and we found out that one of the most marketable heavies was really a roid-raging cheat.
Danny Williams continued to be ducked by all the titlists (notice how they never call him out?) and let Audley beat him on purpose just for a laugh. Some old guys came out of retirement and did okay in the climate. Tony Thompson did well but he's not a dish, so what the Hell?
And on top of all this, I can't remember seeing a decent heavyweight fight this year. Though last week's Peter fight wasn't so bad.
Poor division, and it hasn't been worth watching all year.
