WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel (35-2, 26 KOs) scored a twelfth round TKO over game Luis Melendez (25-3, 20 KOs) to retain his world title on Thursday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. It was back-and-forth action throughout with both fighters down. Menendez staggered Montiel in round three. Montiel dropped Melendez at the end of round six, but was dropped himself while going for the kill in the seventh. Bleeding badly over both eyes, Montiel finally won it by dropping Melendez with a hard body shot in the last round. Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight moments later at 1:58. At the time of the stoppage, scores were 107-100, 107-100, 107-101 for Montiel. [details]

Yeah I saw it, but Montiel is more of a brawler than a boxer, that guy from Colombia gave him hell, and **** up Montiel's face...Comment

A brawler could be a name for Cotto. Not Moniel. Just cause the guy throws a bunch of punchs and isn't gun shy doesn't make him a barwler. He repeatedly gave movement to set up his punchs and used movement to get out of the way. When the last time a brawl fough with his hands at his hips?Comment

Montiel is quick, he flurries, bob, weave quickly and is also pretty accurate with his punches. However his defense is not good, his head is always unprotected.Comment
