ABC and Fox garnered the night’s largest audiences. ABC’s 90-minute “Dancing With the Stars” averaged 18.3 million viewers from 8 to 9:30, while Fox’s “House” delivered 18.1 million viewers in its fourth season premiere at 9. Among adults 18 to 49, “House” earned its best ratings ever without the benefit of following “American Idol.”
For the night over all, ABC was the most-watched network, although it lost many of its viewers at 9:30 for the 90-minute debut of “Boston Legal” (10.3 million). Last year, the show’s third season premiere drew about a million more viewers.
Fox led the night easily in the 18-to-49 demographic thanks largely to “House,” although season three of “Bones” got off to a modest start at 8 (8.3 million).
NBC tied ABC for second place among adults 18 to 49. Opposite “Cane,” the premiere of NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (12.1 million), now in its ninth season, led the 10 p.m. hour by a wide margin in the 18 to 49 set. In total viewers, however, NBC finished fourth, as week three of “Biggest Loser” averaged 6.6 million from 8 to 10.
CBS, third in total viewers for the night but fourth in the 18- to-49 set, saw its best ratings of the night at 8 with the fourth season debut of “NCIS” (13.7 million). A third season of CBS’s drama “The Unit” also earned a decent 10.7 million viewers at 9.
Finally, the CW’s new series “Reaper,” from the director Kevin Smith, garnered 3.4 million viewers in its debut at 9, improving on Week 2 of “Beauty and the Geek” at 8 (3 million).
