World Boxing Council heavyweight world champion Oleg Maskaev, from Kazakhstan-Russia, suffered a multiple disc herniation injury which will cause him to be inactive for at least for the next three or four months, according to his lawyer, which would lead the heavyweight division to 14 months without activity. Consequently, his fight against official challenger Samuel Peter from Nigeria, scheduled for October 6 at Madison Square Garden, will not take place. [details]

that sucks. i know if i was a top contender i would not want to win the title that way, yeh its the right thing to do but think about it, wouldn't you want to become champion by beating the champ. anyways is the card completely called off or is peter still fighting someone else, cause i have tickets for it and want to know whats going on.Comment

The problem here is Peter has been trying to get the chance to prove himself for the longest. I wonder if Vatali will be as aggressive for a title shot in 08 knowing that it will be agaist Peter instead of Oleg. Best possible outcome for boxing would be if Peer keeps the belt and tries to set up a big money unification/rematch with Vlad.Comment

Sam Peter isn't the official legit champ ... only the Interim one
other weight divisions have had interim champs .. take Casamayor and Shane Mosley .. both those fighters are currently interim champions for the WBC
hopefully Sam Peter can legitemetly win the WBC belt in the ring, when Oleg is ready to fight.Comment
