What will make you an ATG...

In this or the next era. Say you are a fighter who is just starting what will you have to do to soldify yourself as an all time great in the far off future. What are your specific qualifications?

You have to beat everyone that has ever called you out.

Nevermind that there aren't enough hours in the day. If you have ever ducked anyone, you will never be considered an all time great. At least that is what I've been hearing on here for a while now.

Rematch anyone who has ever beaten you (a la Mosley).

A better example would be Lennox Lewis.

Yeah, he actually won all of his rematches. But Mosley is my fav, and even in defeat (both times) he was magnanimous, which shows true heart.

I have always maintained that being an all-time-great has nothing to do with who you fight. Being a great champion is dependent on fighting great opponents, but being a great fighter is not.

For example, Pernell Whitaker would have been just as slick, and just as skilled had he fought lesser opposition. Meldrick Taylor would have still had unbelievable hand speed had he fought nobodys. Sugar Ray Leonard would have still been throwing amazing combinations with great power, even if he was relegated to fighting the Arturo Gatti's of the world.

Fighting great opposition does one thing, It give your fans a yardstick with witch to measure you against.

There are fighters like Nicollino Locche, who fought perhaps 3 notable fights in their 100+ fight careers. That doesn't make him any less of an all time great. It doesn't mean he wasn't good, It means he never got the big fights other fighters got, for whatever reason.

I totally agree with your point but, if you are going to get your recognition as an ATG, you will need to fight the best. Would anyone cared how slick Pernell was if he fought sub-par competition, no they would say he has potential, but needed to step up in competition...

Also, I think you need to Unify your division... you need to fight the best that you can at the time... You need the respect and the resume to be an ATG
