Joe louis early in life, maybe his mid teens, first fell in love with baseball. But since baseball at that time was so segregated, and because it didnt bring in any money, he had to go get jobs in car factories and stuff.
Also, his mom had set aside money for violin lessons for him. Joe would eventually use that money for Boxing lessons, but only because his friend Mckinney advised him that Amatuer boxing could get him money from the get go, while violins required years of practice before you could join a band and start making money.
Also i gotta note, that due to Sharkey-Shmelling fiasco, where Shmelling won the title on a controversial foul, boxing suffered a tremendous decline.
So, lets say Louis had gotten into Baseball or the Violin. Lets ay Mckinney and Louis never meet, and he takes up the violin lessons. Or lets say Louis stuck it out with baseball.
Considering Joe Louis had a lot to do with reviving boxing during the time period, where would boxing be today without him?
It was already in serious decline... would it have gotten so bad that future greats like Muhammad Ali would never even get into the sport.
