    Cotto's Style Change

I've been seeing this shift in Miguel Cotto's fighting style after his fight with Abdullaev. That fight was the last fight where he showed that he could box and move and be a very good, technically proficient fighter with good foot work, good handspeed and excellent power. After that fight it seems that his style changed into a (dare I say it) 1 dimensional fighter, albeit one that gets the job done. He's almost abandoned his previous style which was so successful and become this strong, bull, who just walks you down with not so much power any more but rather strength and determination. He's gotten buzzed consistently now coming in because lately he literally jumps in to attack the body instead of setting it up like used to efficiently and intelligently. The only similarity I see in these 2 Miguel's are his commitment to body punching. Also, 1 more thing his handspeed IMO has decreased as well in his move up to WW... I just hope these new faults in his new armor don't come to bite him in the ass come Nov. 10. Does anyone here agree with what I've seen and do you have an idea as to why he changed?

Compare this Miguel to his last 5 fights.

Miguel was a very good boxer/puncher earlier in hs career. He seemed to fall in love with his power and the KO. He is now more of a very aggressive fighter but smart aggression. He just pressures you and breaks you down. Ive been a fan since day one, my father had me watch him since his pro debut on ESPN because he was excited about him because he was Puerto Rican and i guess was one of the best amateurs ever from the island.

I have to be honest with you. I've been feeling the same way. YOu can clearly see the diffrence.

YOu haven't seen Cotto fight like this after the Torres fight. That's what I think changed his style IMO.

Cotto would mix it up then go to the body. Now Cotto just goes to the body. IMO his power has decreased also.. Cotto has also made a habit..

If you notice in his past fights.. After the Branco fight. Cotto when he come out after doing what he has to do.. He moves from the conventional stance to southpaw stance and back again for no reason. Look at the Paulie fight.. In the later rounds he does it alot! That's when Paulie decides to go in and throw combos..

This is the Cotto that the Cotto that picked his shots..

Damn look at the 1-2-3 combo jab, right straight, left upper cut counter he does on Sosa.... Beautiful!

It's the haircut, once he got a hair cut he thought he needed a new style to accomodate.

I'm a cotto fan, but I have not notice a drastic change in styles. I actually think he fights the same style in almost all his fights, except sometimes he moves quicker in some fights. And sometimes he moves slower, it's why I want him to win against Mosley. Yet, Mosley can change his style up to something Cotto hasn't seen before. The question is can Cotto change up his style if he has to against Mosley. Mosley is studying those tapes so well, because he knows cotto fights one kind of style in almost all his fights. I think thats one of Cotto's flaws, is that his style doesn't really ever change. So, I completely disagree with the topic creator.

I'd rather see a ****er with power rather then a boxer with power ANYTIME

I see your point a little but he did do some similiar boxing/ lateral movement against Quintana. I think his current style is a result of the confidence he has gained. As far as losing power no, he has just moved up in weight and his competition is far and above better. I definitely think he needs to stop switching to southpaw so much but at the end of the Zab fight it was probably a smart move considering he could blind side Zab due to the Eye.

Cotto has always possesed the " Seek-and-Destroy " style in all of his fights... He has always displayed affective aggression, but I have witnessed a minor decline in boxing technique, though I contribute this to Miguel being less concerned with boxing being as his power has increased at Welterweight... Hence, He can easily over-power opponents, resulting in him simply brawling

Cotto seems to have forgotten about the head a bit..weird usually fighters forget to attack the body. Lately he has given up head shots to go to the body a bit to often. His power is still there. He has his hands full againts Mosely..should turn out to be a great fight..I still dont know who will win this one..Im thinking if it goes past 6rds..Cotto will take it becuase Im not sure if Mosely or anyone can really take that body attack for more than 6-7rds without breaking down. But if Mosely catches him and hurts him..He might win by TKO..Mosely will be all over him like a fly on ****. Its a tough fight to call.

Wacth Cotto vs Brown. Cotto was actually being boo'd for being boring in that fight. I remember him saying to his uncle in the corner something like hes fighting a smart fight he dont care what they think or somthin along them lines. It was on the undercard of De La Hoya-Vargas i believe.

Cotto used to do a lot more "boxing" i guess you could call it before. He just fought a lot smarter. He has so much confidence now that he just goes right at you. He fell in love with his power. He pretty much adapts to whateva he needs to do in the ring.

Cotto stops Mosley late, in my opinion. Cant wait for that fight!
