Will Christmas Come Early for Jermain Taylor?

By TK Stewart - As a kid, there were a couple years when Santa Claus and his reindeer flew right by the ramshackle house that Jermain Taylor, his three sisters and his mother called home. For the Taylor family, there were times when December 25th rolled around on the calendar and there were no presents wrapped with care, no fat man in a red suit to spread holiday cheer and not even a Christmas tree in the family living room.

“Christmas time was hard,” says Taylor, who is currently locked away in a training camp in Scotrun, Pennsylvania, high in the Pocono Mountains, preparing to defend his world middleweight championship against Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik, on September 29th at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.

“There was a couple of times when we didn't have Christmas,” continues Taylor. When I look at where I come from, if there was a picture that I could show you, it would almost bring you to tears how poor we were,” says the soft-spoken 29 year-old champ.

His father left the family and walked out the door when Taylor was only five years old. Several years later, his grandmother, with whom he was especially close, was murdered by her own son, Taylor’s uncle, who then killed himself three days later. His bronze medal from the 1998 Goodwill Games was buried with her. [details]

If Taylor wins, who does he want to fight next? He's going up to 168, he can fight Calzaghe or Kessler in that weight class. But one problem, I believe I heard Calzaghe wants to go up in weight after his fight with Kessler. Like if Taylor proves himself in his fight with Pavlik and shuts up all the haters saying he's going to get destroyed by Pavlik... Then what? Who does he fight at 168. Maybe he wants to take on an easier opponent at 168, since it will be his first time at that weight class and that would be a smart decision... Maybe sakio bika or is that to hard of a fight for his first fight at 168?

I think that if Calzaghe beats Kessler, he could potentialyl stay at 168, or maybe he and Taylor could find a catchweight to fight at. However, should Taylor and Calzaghe win their respective fights, I really want to see Hopkins-Calzaghe before anything at 175. Perhaps Taylor could fight Edison Miranda at 168 since it's obvious both of them are moving up.

Plus, what people tend to forget is that Taylor has a rematch clause with Pavlik at 168 should he lose.

Aren't clause's bs? I'm pretty sure some boxers have gotten around them.

yea i hope Taylor wins, he is getting extremely underrated in this fight, I'm still getting through the fact that Taylor is the underdog.

Catchweight of 166 for the rematch; I don't like that actually, as Pavlik intends to fight at middleweight afterwards and it would be a bit of a problem to have his first defense at a higher weight
