Ray Wheatley speaks to Craig Christian, pictured, the Perth-based trainer of Indonesian ring idol Chris John.
Q: Would you welcome a fight against Manny Pacquiao? Has Chris John got the skills to defeat the Pacman?
I don’t see Pacquiao coming down to featherweight but if he did we will fight anyone at 126. I think our speed and skill would keep us away from Pacquiao’s left hand and get us a points victory.
Q: What has been Chris’s best win?
Of course the Juan Manuel Marquez victory speaks for itself and the Derrick Gainer fight was special as Chris had a lot of pressure on him. Many people were doing their best to make him lose.
Q: Are you after a super bout with Marquez now he has just defeated Marco Antonio Barrera. Would it be the same result?
We will take on any fighter at featherweight, this is our natural division. If Marquez comes back down we won’t say no as long as the offer is right. We are confident the result will be the same as the first fight. We think we have his style worked out. It suits our way of fighting. Marquez ain’t getting any younger and Chris is only getting better. You will see the best of Chris in the next two years.
Q: You train world rated 140-pound boxer Naoufel Ben Rabah. Will he continue boxing after losing to Lovemore Ndou?
Choc is waiting for my call; all he wants is a rematch. Ndou wants no part of it. I will back Choc against anyone at 140. Junior Witter would be a great fight. He is smart but Choc is smarter and has speed and age on his side.
Q: You are training hot lightweight Aboriginal prospect William Kickett. Tell me about him.
William made his debut on the Chris John-Rojas card. He is an exceptional talent much like our WBA champion Anthony Mundine except he has had an amateur background. He would have to be the most exciting prospect I have seen. He is also a great guy, very level headed. He has a great future in boxing.
