At 136 lbs and in the thick of training, Manny Pacquiao expects no problem making the WBC-supervised weigh-in on Sept. 6 or one month before he faces Marco Antonio Barrera in Las Vegas.
“I feel okay. I like my weight. I like the way I’m moving right now,” said Pacquiao the other night from Cebu City where he’s been training for almost two weeks now.
On Sept. 6, the WBC will conduct a weigh-in for both Pacquiao and Barrera who is training in Guadalajara.
They should weigh no more than 143 lbs but face no immediate sanction if they fail.
The limit for the Oct. 6 fight is 130 lbs. The WBC practice is being made to ensure that the limit is within reach of both boxers. The final weigh-in is held on the eve of the fight.
Barrera, who turns 34 in January, has stayed as a super-featherweight over the last few years, and should have no problem either making the weight.
Freddie Roach said he’s happy “where Pacquiao is right now” and that the weight should never be a problem with still 36 days before the scheduled 12-rounder at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Roach said a local WBC representative will supervise Pacquiao’s 30-day, pre-fight weigh-in in Cebu.
Juan Manuel Marquez, who will defend his WBC super-featherweight crown against Rocky Juarez, weighed 132.1 lbs one month before the Sept. 15 fight.
The challenger was at 139 lbs.
The American trainer has been in Cebu more than a week now, and has seen Pacquiao spar for a total of 19 rounds in four sessions. Sparring is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Pacquiao runs everyday, and does gym work on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. He does not report to the gym on Sundays.
Pacquiao sparred six rounds the other day, and the number of rounds may increase in the coming days.
Roach said he expects no less than 130 rounds of sparring for Pacquiao.
He said there’s really no schedule when Pacquiao would do eight, 10 or 12 rounds of sparring in a day.
“It depends daily on how he does. We really don’t plan it although he’s in a great frame of mind. But when Manny shows that he’s ready for more rounds then we’ll do it,” said Roach.
