Barrera looks down at Pacquiao’s punch

    By Dennis Principe
    Correspondent

DESPITE the beating he absorbed from Manny Pacquiao, Marco Antonio Barrera continues to belittle the Filipino sensation’s smashing victory against the Mexican superstar nearly four years ago.

In an article that came out over the weekend on Mexican paper Esto, the 33-year-old Barrera said he does not consider Pacquiao as a real solid puncher.

Although Barrera concedes that Pacquiao has probably the fastest pair of hands, the Mexican ranks the General Santos City native lower than bitter compatriot Erik Morales and Rocky Juarez in the power-punching department.

“He is not the greatest puncher that I’ve met. His best asset is the speed of his hands. His fast combinations are the ones that are really doing the damage,” said Barrera.

This is the reason why Barrera hired three Japanese slicksters and an amateur fighter to simulate Pacquiao’s blinding combinations.

“There are several good quality Mexican sparring partners but I decided to get Japanese fighters because their style is like Pacquiao,” added Barrera.

Barrera’s long-time Japanese trainer Sendai Tanaka has signed up two undefeated Japanese fighters who agreed to work as sparring partners for Barrera.

First to agree is Takahiro Aoh, a 23-year-old southpaw featherweight with a record of 15- 0, eight by knockout.

Filipino sources in Japan contacted by BusinessMirror said Aoh possesses good lateral movement apart from having good timing in shifting his head and body from side to side. But unlike Pacquiao, Aoh is not the type of slugger who will slug it out with his opponent.

Aoh is said to be a good counterpuncher and has good timing with his combinations.

Another Japanese set to join Aoh in Mexico is Yoshimitsu Yashiro, a lanky five-foot-nine southpaw who is unscathed in 18 fights, 10 via knockout.

The 27-year-old Yashiro is said to be a more aggressive than Aoh, as disclosed by the source who has been working in Japan for less than a year, receiving a monthly pay of $1,000.

The same source said Barrera may not really mix it up with Pacquiao and will probably try to outbox the Filipino from a distance.

“If you saw Barrera’s last two fights against Rocky Juarez, you will notice Barrera fought like a boxer who just wants to win, and not to thrill the crowd that is typical of a Mexican warrior,” said the source.

Back in November 2003 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, a heavy underdog Pacquiao pulverized Barrera inside 11 rounds.

The win jumpstarted Pacquiao’s ascend to the top of the pound-for-pound ladder as it gave him an opportunity to face and beat other superstar of their division, most notably Barrera’s compatriot Erik Morales.

Already assured of a relevant place in history apart from being financially secured via his multimillion-dollar fight earnings, Barrera insisted that he cannot just end his career without exacting revenge at his Filipino tormentor.

“I just cannot end my career without avenging my loss to Pacquiao,” added Barrera.

The 28-year-old Pacquiao is currently training at the RWS Gym in Cebu.

This is the first time the feared southpaw ****er is holding his training camp in the Philippines in preparation for a major bout.

Ever since he started campaigning in the United States, Pacquiao did most of his preparations at the famed Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California, under legendary guru Freddie Roach.

Roach, a revered trainer among Filipino fighters, arrived nearly two weeks ago and has since been in-charge of Pacquiao’s Cebu regimen.

      Yeah I don't know.

You can point to Pac having great power by dropping JMM three times in the first round of their fight. But outside of that, he's more of a volume puncher who breaks his opponents down.

I think he hits hard, but not a Diego Corrales type hard hitter. The sheer volume of his punches in coalition with how fast his hands are makes him a knockout artist. He hits people with crazy straight punching combinations.

I certainly don't think he tops a 1 punch power list P4P.........even though I'd say he has some excellent pop.

There really aren't 1 punch KO guys in most divisions. Sure there are one punch knockouts but not consistently. Even great punchers like Trinidad, Hamed, Moslye at lightweight, etc. have high KO percentages but it takes several good shots to beat good fighters and there is nothing wrong with that. Manny hits hard enough to keep guys off him which is all he needs

Man, mab will shut the f**k up once he feels that metal plate vibrate inside his head when he gets hit w/ PAC's new weapon of choice, the RIGHT HOOK!!

Anyway, pretty much all power punchers are the fast fighters. Its basic physics, you take a MACK TRUCK goin' 100 mph compared to a MACK truck going 10 mph. which one do you think will do the most damage?

PAC's power isn't the same as it used to be, but he's still an A Class ****er for sure.

lol, marco tryin to get into pac's head, probably baiting him to engage early. pac's wiser this time. he'll "tenderize" him first then go for a late KO.

                  nice try marco.
