decided to put this slow period in my favorite sport to good use to review some up and coming fights. Took another look at several Calzaghe and Kessler fights and I have to say that Kessler looks to be by far the best opponent that Joe has ever fought, probably vice versa too and no disrespect to Joe but he gets away with a lot on his speed and south paw style. Everyone has heard him called a slapper but he doesnt slap as much as throws short wide shuffle punches ala Sugar ray. I dont see that workin against Kessler who has a great jab and combinations. Kessler also seems to have excellent foot work and balance. which will help him avoid a lot of those quick but wide shots Joe likes to throw. thoughts?
Kessler will light Joe Calz up!

I like Kessler in this ,, Joes a good fighter but I feel a little overated , age is a factor , they both have the tools to upset the other although I like Kesslers jab and his right cross is made for Joe , Joe comes in open and he could catch a big right straight down the middle , dont know how Kessler will react if Joe gets past his jab and can upset his flow as Ive never seen Kessler pressured which doesnt mean he will fall apart , Kessler will win no problems if its a fight at range.
I agree Kessler is the best Joe has fought ,, Joe has an old Eubanks and a few fringe fighters like Brewer Shieka who like most were past their best , people say Kesslers resume is no good , well he is only starting to be known and has unified two belts and going for his third , Joes had it for 10 yrs an fought one mandatory and a bunch of middleweights , time for Joe to move over and a new generation of champ to take over .Comment

Calzaghe keeps his elbows tucked into his sides when throwing combinations instead of having them out from the body at 45 degrees as most other boxers do and gives the impression of inside glove slapping. This style won't generate as much power as a hook punch coming at you from shoulder or chest height but it means he can throw them faster, more frequently and it uses less energy. If Kessler underestimates Calzaghe's punching technique then he will lose. But I don't think he will
This fight depends on Kessler's power. If he can keep Calzaghe off him he'll win, if he hits hard enough he'll KO Joe coming in
In a slow paced boxing match Calzaghe doesn't have a hope, Kessler will pick him off left, right and centre. Calzaghe has always struggled against stand-up pure boxers (Opreda, Thornberry, Starie, Woodhall) and when Reid and Veit in their second fight laid off he didn't know what to do, he doesn't cut off the ring well, can't weave forward or stick the jab (he can flick the jab) or find gaps (you can't hit through gaps when you don't turn your knuckles). His only hope is to stick to Kessler's chest and try to take him out early with his winging hooks, or completely out-work him
I've got a feeling we'll see another Hamed-Barrera, with Kessler being Barrera
Calzaghe boxed out of his skin against Lacy, but he's never ever looked near that sharp in thought and reaction in any other fight and he's not exactly getting any younger (and his hand isn't exactly getting stronger)
I reckon Kessler gets him. Kessler's in his prime. He has some kind of back injuries so he avoids time-waster fights and tries to take lucrative matches/fights that count. Joe hasn't faced many long-range boxers. I think Joe finds himself out of range and, frustrated by the 4th round, he starts waving his right arm about as he does and throwing his left from out of range, falling from southpaw to orthodox. He does that and Kessler picks him to piecesLast edited by Orange Sneakers; 08-23-2007, 07:39 PM.Comment

I agree. plus calzaghe is wide open with his hands down and sometimes and tends to get very wild. a boxer like Kessler would take advantage of that by countering with hard shots. Lacy could not do that because he was shocked because of the speed of calzaghe and how well calzaghe fought on the inside.decided to put this slow period in my favorite sport to good use to review some up and coming fights. Calzaghe makes no end of mistakes, Kessler makes no mistakes
It's that simple.
Kessler should be the favourite, for sureComment

I'm usually very good with predicting the winner.. but most of the upcoming fights have me going clueless
Taylor / Pavlik
Hatton / Mayweather
Calzaghe / Kessler
all three of those are pick 'em fights for me and I don't see a clear favorite (maybe Mayweather has the edge)Comment

ricky has the right idea coming in at 140 so he is as quick as possible but I have to give the regrettable nod to fmj. im not counting ricky out just making him a dog.I'm usually very good with predicting the winner.. but most of the upcoming fights have me going clueless
