Oleg Maskaev-Sam Peter: No Gimmicks Needed

By Keith Idec - To be blunt, Oleg Maskaev and Samuel Peter are about as entertaining in press conference settings as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Bernard Hopkins would be if they fought.

So if you went to Madison Square Garden Thursday expecting anything out of the ordinary, much less something similar to Ricardo Mayorga's maniacal rant across the street two weeks earlier, you were in the wrong place. Maskaev and Peter predictably responded to questions in boring but professional fashion, leaving all the hyperbole and manipulation of the English language to promoter Don King. More important, though, they assured us that they're going to leave fight fans satisfied when they finally square off on Oct. 6 in New York, where they'll fight for Maskaev's World Boxing Council heavyweight title in the main event of a Showtime Championship Boxing broadcast. Nice try. But this analogy falls woefully short. This is a clear example of "brain dead journalism" at best. First of all if Samuel Peter's opponents aren't running or excessively clinching he can be as entertaining as any fighter out there, hands down. His knockout power commands the respect of any heavyweight. Wlad Klitchko (forgive my spelling) got away by the skin of his teeth. Sam was too gassed and inexperienced to finish him after knocking him down three times.

The only thing that makes some of Sam's fights less than entertaining are fighters that are on survival mode, who would rather clinch than punch. For that you cannot fault Sam but his scared to death opponents. And by the way, don't expect Oleg to do anything different. Once he feels Sam's power, he'll turn into a European version of John Ruiz.

Re-read the sentence, amigo. He was writing about their entertainment value "in press conference settings."

It says if Peter wind he'll fight Wlad. What about Vitali though? He has the right to challenge Peter according to the previous WBC ruling.

I wouldn't complain either way, but I'd rather see Peter-Wlad II

I hope they don't **** Vitali out of his shot, I would much rather see him vs. Peter than Wlad.

I agree. wlad vs peter will just be another schooling from the outside with wlad jabbing him to death. with vitali we may see more big exchanges as its unlikely vitali will have that same awckward movement since he;s had big leg problems. thats a far more exciting matchup
