This is EXACTLY what I've been talking about for a LOOONG time.
Every year, HBO has like 5-10 PPV cards. So ultimately when a PPV card roles around on HBO, (before you hear the fighters names) your initial reaction is "oh ****, another fight im gonna have to pay for, that more times then not is not worth the whopping 50$ charge!"
Every year, SHOWTIME has like 1, or sometimes 2, PPV cards every year! So, when that lucky card that makes PPV roles around, your intial reaction is to purk up and say, "holy crap, a showtime PPV?! who's fighting?!"
So for a SHOWTIME PPV, BEFORE you even know whos fighting, your reaction is very positive. And if the names fill your needs your way more likely to buy.
Like VARGAS-MAYORGA. Which is a very good fight, that is surely gonna leave you satisfied with the money you spend, and has two eyecatching names. BOTH of which sell a fight easily.
But when an HBO PPV roles around, your reaction BEFORE you know whos fighting, is a very negative one. And if the names to fulfill your needs then your much more likely not to buy.
Like MARQUEZ-BARRIOS. Which is a very good fight, but is it worth your $50? hell no. A casual fan is oblivious to the fact that there is a LOADED undercard.
Unfortunetly, HBO's PPVs probably still do better, because HBO is a MUCH bigger name and there advertising reaches out to a MUCH wider fanbase of of casual fans and hardcore fans alike.
But if HBO took SHOWTIMES approach, i can assure you that there would be a steep incline in SALES. Of coarse, budget plays into it, and Showtime only aires like 12 championship fights a year, to HBOs like 40. But you get what im saying...
