“I want to get a title shot against Rees,” explained the undefeated number three ranked contender. “He’s 27-0, I’m 27-0, and I feel that this is a great opportunity for me; I want to be world champion, I want to make history, and I want to fight for the title.”A
So far there have been no discussions of such a match between Salita’s team and Team Rees, BUT there was an on going exchange with the former belt holder, Souleymane M’baye’s team, the man whom Rees took the title from, and Salita’s people.
Rees took M’baye’s title so Rees is the next man in line and that brings us to this challenge.
“He did a great job winning the title,” said Salita, “and I want to prove that I’m the best. I promise you if I get the opportunity I’m going to win the title.”
Salita realizes that he has now reached the stage in his career where he must fight the best, and that includes Ricky Hatton.
“I said I want to fight the best in the world,” reminded Salita, “and that includes Ricky Hatton.”
Right now Salita is totally focused on Rees, who like Hatton, is British. A fight with Rees may very well happen in England with that country’s foremost promoter Frank Warren.
“Frank Warren is a great promoter and I’m sure that when the time comes he will make it happen,” said Salita.
“I’d like it to happen here but if I have to go to England, I will go to England,” promised Salita.
“I’m a known challenger and I’m challenging him,” said Salita. “So if he’s a man and a true champion, he’ll give me the fight.”
“My gym mate, someone I grew up with, Luis Collazo, he almost did the job with Ricky Hatton, I can assure you that if I’m given the opportunity I will be bringing the title back to Brooklyn, and I will be the new WBA Champion."
Salita’s promoter, Lou DiBella, is a very astute businessman and a fight between Salita and Rees for a title, even in Rees’ home town, is hard to pass up. He has told Salita that he will do his best to secure a fight as soon as possible between the two undefeated boxers. “As soon as I heard about this I called Lou last night and Lou told me that he will get in touch with Frank Warren to see if he could make it happen.”
This sounds like the type of fight that will fill seats. Two young, hungry undefeated boxers in a world title fight. It will probably do better in England. The British will cherish the moment as they watch one of their own defending his world title on British Empire’s sacred ground. Salita has shown courage and willingness to fight the best. He has been frustrated by his inability to move things along as fast as he would like to. This fight should clear all that up.
