By Cliff Rold - Doing my undergraduate work in San Francisco created opportunities to experience art, culture and history. It also allowed me to take a class on the career works of ******ia Woolf without hiding in shame. I don’t think I could have pulled it off at a school someplace like Philly.
Woolf came to mind this week as I wondered what to write about this week (mostly the title of one of her books, which I stole for this column). We’re between acts this week, one week removed from a big fight and one week prior to what should be an action packed weekend.
That doesn’t mean we can get past the wait. Nope, this week has to be pushed through to get to the good stuff. The big fights on tap aren’t all that big and it’s questionable whether they will have much fight. Friday night on ESPN2 we have welterweight super prospect Andre Berto (18-0, 16 KO) of Winter Haven, Florida against former mis-mandatory title challenger Cosme Rivera (30-10-2, 21 KO) of Mexico in a fight that could rightly be billed as “Better Stuff Later,” at least for Berto. At least it will be exciting while it lasts.
Saturday, on HBO, we have a fight that could be billed as “Better Stuff Yesterday” or even “Really? Nothing Better?” Usually, a battle between two fairly recent former World welterweight champs (Ring Magazine, lineal…whole nine) would be cause for interest. [details]
