Weird WBC unification rule with WBO

    quote:
Nowadays, the WBO allows its champions to unify their crowns in matches against WBA and IBF (International Boxing Federation) world champions. The WBC (World Boxing Council) refused for years to let their world champions take part in unification bouts with WBO title holders, with the exception of the super middleweight unification bout between Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank in 1993 after Don King had stepped in to arrange it. Ironically, the judges scored the fight as a draw after twelve rounds and the titles were not unified
kinda weird read it on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Boxing_Organization

        Don King owns WBC

here is a quote from a journal:
WBC President Jose] Sulaiman became more King’s junior partner than his independent regulator.”[1] Another journalist, Peter Heller, echoes that comment: “Sulaiman...became little more than an errand boy for Don King.” Heller also quotes British promoter Mickey Duff as saying, “My complaint is that Jose Sulaiman is not happy his friend Don King is the biggest promoter in boxing. Sulaiman will only be happy when Don King is the only promoter in boxing.”[2]

it weird how Don King could convince WBC to do stuff.

another weird thing is that there is a close ties with Mayweather too.

Off of the top of my head, the following were unification bouts involving the WBC and WBO:

Diego Corrales - Jose Luis Castillo I (Lightweight - 2005)
*2005 Fight of the Year, and considered by many to be among the greatest fights in boxing history*
Bernard Hopkins - Oscar de la Hoya (Middleweight- 2004)
*1st bout in boxing history where WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO titles were all on the line at the same time. Drew 1 million PPV buys*
Erik Morales - Marco Antonio Barrera I (Super Bantamweight - 2000)
                    *2000 Fight of the Year*
Naseem Hamed - Cesar Soto (Featherweight - either 1999 or 2000)
                    Ricardo Lopez-Nene Sanchez (Strawweight - 1997)
*1st ever unification bout in strawweight history*
Chris Eubank - Nigel Benn II (Super Middleweight - 1993)
Sugar Ray Leonard -Thomas Hearns II (Super Middleweight - 1989)
*1st ever unification bout in super middleweight history*
                    and now Calzaghe-Kessler.

Not a ton over the past 20 years, but certainly more than the 1 bout Wikipedia referenced, not to mention the significance some of them carry
