    Great Nicknames of the Past

Which do you like best? Below are the fighters to whom the above nicknames are attributed.*
    1. Luis Angel Firpo
    2. Joe Louis
    3. Mickey Walker
    4. Jake LaMotta
    5. Archie Moore
    6. Jack Johnson
    7. Rocky Marciano
    8. Jack Dempsey
    9. Tommy Hearns
    10. Roberto Duran
My favorite belonged to the Argentine Luis Angel Firpo who once fought Dempsey: "Wild Bull of the Pampas" (El Toro Salvaje de las Pampas)

Nicknamed simply because he hits hard, the impact (if you will) of Roberto Duran's "Hands of Stone" gets lost in translation. The direct translation from spanish (Manos de Piedra) hardly makes any sense...

*I've omitted the word "the" (in the nicknames) for the sake of brevity.

Hands Of Stone, that should have been Tyson's Nickname back in the days

I like 3 equally. Hands of Stong (actually sounds cooler in spanish), motor city cobra and raging bull. Also like Iron for Tyson and Will of the Wisp for Pep.

One thing thats pretty interesting is that neither Trinidad or Cotto have fighting nicknames. Tito is more like calling a fighter Billy or Ray instead of William or Raymond.

Not sure why this is......just thought it was interesting.

La Motta's nickname was the Bronx Bull, Raging Bull was the title of the movie.

I know. My Freudian slip was influenced by the movie title, which I noticed after posting. Unfurtunately, only mods can edit polls. Ironically enough, "Raging Bull" makes better copy.

I like Hearns' nickname of "The Hitman", better than "The Motor City Cobra".

In fact, no one had a nickname more suitable, than that one for Hearns.

It (Hitman) was also better known. I chose "Cobra" precisely because it was less known. And more exotic.

Your avatar (pit bull), a mauler in his own right, reflects your preference...
