There is only one reason margarito even came close to winning

For one, the california judges gave him every benefit of the doubt, Williams was at least 2 rounds up by the 12th.

Anyhow, the only reason Margarito came close to winning was because williams would stand in front of him and allow margarito to close the distance between them. When williams was throwing the jab in his face and moving laterally, Margarito looked like he had no answer to it. When Williams gave him head movement, Margarito had no answer. When williams stood in front of margarito not doing anything letting him come inside, thats when Margarito won rounds.

Which proves one thing. Some of you say styles make fights and that a fight against mayweather wouldnt be much different. All Mayweather would have to do is show him angles and move his head and keep his feet moving, Margarito would have NO answer for that. To beat him, you have to be on the move and show him something different. Williams was able to do it not just because of his size and reach, but because he showed up with the right gameplan that could be excecuted by any boxer with the sense to move and punch as opposed to standing and trading the entire fight, which is what he wants you to do.

A fight against Cotto might not fare all that much better, Cotto keeps his hands positioned high, Margarito with NO jab and NO straight punches whatsoever could give away alot of early rounds to cotto just like he did williams as he waits for guys to tire or give him more openings and by that time, with Cotto's improved and vicious body attack, Margarito could be in for a long night he doesnt land something huge, and with cotto you have to land it over and over again because as wobbled as he gets, he still standing like tony montana.

I was very impressed that given Paul Williams' size, Marg could not launch any kind of effective body attack. His movement, southpaw stance, and the tremendous amount of punches really confused Antonio all night.

I observed the same thing. I still think Clottey was well on his way to winning against Marg to before the injury limited his offense.

The one reason is that Williams is not all that good.

I agree about the judging. Marg won four rounds clearly, but I can't imagine which of the first six the two judges gave him.

          Good observation...

The importance of defensive head and body movement is critical for longevity in this sport.

For his size, Williams is athletically gifted. Not many lanky fighters his size can move that well.

He'll be around for some great fights for a good while. .

Margarito didn't deserve to win this. PW fought from START to FINISH. Margarito fought from midway to finish. That's not a guy trying to win. Muchless the output by Williams shows his determination to win each round and not sit back and hope he can steal rounds from bias judges.

The Ref started to get involved way too much threatening to take a point away from Williams' holding... that was a joke. If he had taken a point away I'd have been up in arms. His warning alone was ****** because Paul was afraid to clinch at all in the last 3 rounds or so in fear of losing a point.

                Right on....

Being the Champ, Tony could've shown much more determination in keeping his title, which is what many of his fans I'm sure were expecting.

Don't know what his corner was telling him, since I couldn't watch the fight,
but, somebody should've been firing him up and screaming in his face reminding him of what losing the fight would cost him in future title shots and money.

My take on it is, Marg's plan was to let Paul tire out, to then pick up the pace and go for the win/ko. If that was the plan, I think it backfired.

Maybe his corner is to blame.

He may need a re-birth like MAB had against Naz to win impressively in the future. Don't think it's likely, though.

Paul showed the hunger and the heart that's rare in the sport.

MArgarito showed SERIOUS HEART in the fight. My hat is off the both men for the FIGHT OF YEAR, so far. Either this or the Klit-Brewster fight...

I think Margarito fought the way he planned on fighting. He tried to work the body, blocked a lot of Williams' punches and was sitting down on his shots. I think Paul showed he could take some hard shots and was able to control the distance in most of the rounds. At the end of the fight Margarito thought he had won the fight because he landed the harder shots. Maybe he did, but Paul just plain out worked him last night. I had Paul winning by two rounds.
