By Rick Reeno - A welterweight triple-header made in heaven. HBO will televise three big fights that are sure to please. A rare split feed as the two-fight undercard will come live from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ and the main event will be fought at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.
In his 21st appearance on HBO, Arturo Gatti (40-8, 31 KOs) returns to the ring at the Boardwalk Hall for the first time since knockout loss to then welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir last July. A bigger, but less experienced man will test Gatti's worth at this late stage of his career. Alfonso Gomez (16-3-2, 7 KOs), a competitor from the first season of The Contender reality show, has decent skills, never been stopped and is the naturally bigger man. A win by Gatti may land him a November date with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (27-1, 25 KOs) defends against tough Walter Matthysse (26-1, 25 KOs). Both guys can **** pretty hard. Expect a knockout before the final bell. A win for Cintron may land him a potential bout with Shane Mosley down the line.
The main event from California, will pit WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (34-4, 24 KOs) against undefeated Paul Williams (32-0, 24 KOs), a 6'2 welterweight freak of nature with a 82-83-inch reach. Margarito faces the most serious threat of his career. Usually the hunter, Margarito was hunted down by Williams. If Margarito wins, he moves on to face WBA titleholder Miguel Cotto in a unification bout. If Williams wins, he fulfils his destiny and new star is born. [details]
