SHOWTIME
It was a night of upsets in Bridgeport, Connecticut even before Showtime went on the air and it was highlighted by Nonito Donaire's surprising fifth-round starching of Vic Darchinyan for the IBF flyweight title. Like Jorge Arce before him, Darchinyan found out that it's a different ballgame when you're not bullying a blown-up, non-punching, older foe, but instead a young, energetic upstart who won’t get pushed around physically.
He seemed to have a Marlon Starling moment in the post-fight interviews as he didn't fully comprehend just what had happened to him.
Donaire has broken through as a young star to watch in the future. And I think he'll get full support of the Pinoys from this point forward. As for Darchinyan, perhaps he needed to be knocked down a peg or three. More and more, his arrogance and callous attitude had worn thin on boxing fans. From what I'm told by a good source, one of his cornermen came into Donaire's dressing room after the fight, to not only congratulate them on their victory, but also thanked them for humbling a fighter that was badly in need of it.
Darchinyan, it seems, had fallen into the dangerous trap of believing he was indestructible.
