Emeritus is an honourary status granted to retired professionals. So, if you were in the military, and retired from service, you might keep an honourary rank equal to what you had when you retired. You wouldn't actually have power to do anything with it, but you would still be able to call yourself an admiral/general or whatever.

This isn't another title for people to fight for. It's an award, so there's no reason to get up in arms about it. It's just a recognition of a champion in retirement. Of course, Floyd will undoubtedly unretire and they'll have to take it away, and then give it back when he retires again.
