What exactly does it mean to be the undisputed champion?

I always thought it meant to unify all the belts, or at least the major ones. But then I'm reading on ESPN and "I will be the five-time undisputed heavyweight champion of the world," Holyfield said."

I mean, Holyfield doesn't really think he's going to unify all the belts does he? So "undisputed champion" must obviously mean something other than what I originally thought.

    No your right.

Holyfield thinks he is going to tidy up the division, which he wont although it needs it!

I can't believe Holyfield actually said that then.

Undisputed champ is when everyone considers you the champ at that weightclass, regardless of how many belts you have. You can be undisputed even if you hold one or two belts (as Kostya was at 140 before fighting Hatton).

Hmm so does that mean it is possible beat the undisputed champion, but not become the undisputed champion? I mean, if Tyson was the undisputed champion when he lost to Douglas...does Douglas become the undisputed champion? I would have to say no, but I could be wrong.

to answer your question technically yes, but did he beat the rest of the HW ? no, so he is not he simply beat the undisputed champion....Lennox Lewis was the undisputed champion before he retired
