One of the bigger fights to hit the Rio Grande Valley in quite some time will unfold Aug. 4 at Dodge Arena.
The rematch between super bantamweights Rafael Marquez and Israel Vasquez will take center stage at Dodge Arena in a renewal of their memorable bout last March in which Marquez took Vasquez’s WBC title with a knockout.
Tickets go on sale Saturday at Dodge Arena. Showtime will broadcast the fight live to a nationwide audience.
It’s officially being billed as La Venganza (Vengeance), but co-presenter Gary Shaw made note of a placard that read “Round 8” at Thursday’s news conference announcing the fight from McAllen’s Wyndham Garden Hotel ballroom. In their first meeting March 3, Marquez was declared the winner when Vasquez failed to answer the bell for the eighth round.
“Showtime thought this should be called Round 8 because of the way the fight ended,” Shaw said. “They believe this is just a continuation of the first fight.”
That first fight is being hailed by some as the early favorite for fight of the year. Vasquez put Marquez down in the third round of that slugfest in Carson, Calif., but Marquez rose up to break Vasquez’s nose and take the title four rounds later.
Marquez (37-3, 33 knockouts) is now the WBC super bantamweight champion. He also owns the IBF and IBO bantamweight belts. Vasquez (41-4, 31 KOs) held the WBC title for 15 months before losing it to Marquez.
The rematch will be part of a unique world title doubleheader. The WBA version of the super bantamweight belt also will be on the line as champion Celestino Caballero (26-2, 18 KOs) of Colon, Panama, steps into the ring with Jorge Lacierva-Medina (32-6-6, 22 KOs) of Mexico City.
“You’re going to get to see two world title (bouts) at the same weight class,” Shaw said. “This is very special because you’re getting a preview of fights to come.”
