  • Joel Casamayor Calling Out The World

WBC interim lightweight champion Joel Casamayor, whom many including *********.com rank as the world's #1 135-pounder, announced today he is willing to move up in weight and challenge IBO 140-pound champion Ricky Hatton or Floyd Mayweather. "I have waited patiently for all these so-called lightweight 'champions' to fight me," says Casamayor. "I challenged Juan Diaz at the Freitas fight, but he is hiding behind his promoter's skirt. I'm running out of patience waiting for this boy to grow into a man. Ricky Hatton says he wants big fights. I'll give up the weight and fight him. Floyd Mayweather says he wants big fights. I'll give up the weight and fight him – at any weight."

"I respect Hatton, I respect Mayweather," says Casamayor. "I believe they are men, that they will fight. These other boys, these phony champions, they hide behind their managers and promoters and duck me. Since when does a true world champion have to chase his challengers? These other lightweights who have belts, they should be ashamed to call themselves champions." Casamayor is currently mandated to fight the winner of the Aug. 4 Erik Morales-David Diaz match. Casamayor says he will fight either man, but added there is no guarantee that the winner will simply duck him, as others have since his October win over Corrales. "I will fight anyone," emphasized Casamayor. "I gave up five pounds and beat Corrales. I'll do the same with Hatton. I'll give up any weight for Mayweather – let him name it. I am not going to go away. I'm a real fighter – a real champion – and I know someone will accept this challenge."

Even though Casamayor has slowed down a lot and probably can't keep up with these guys anymore, I'd love to see a Hatton/Casamayor fight and/or a Casamayor/Mayweather fight.

I can't envision the Casa/Floyd fight coming off in any way, but it was a fight that really should have been made way back in 2000/2001 when Joel was the WBA champ and Floyd held the WBC championship. That would have been a hell of a tactical battle.

I found Casamayor's comments on Juan Diaz humorous too. You gotta love Joel, he's still on the grind.

    Ring Champions

Big fight for Hatton: Lightweight Ring Magazine Champion vs Super Lightweight Ring Magazine Champion! But If Mayweather's available and willing I would sooner see Hatton fight him.

It's very clear Joel Casamayor is in desperate need for a big fight. He knows he doesn't have much time left and this was an attempt to solidify a fight with one of these big names. He's going to be trouble for anyone and I think people are willing to wait on him to get a little older before taking a risk with him.

Joel is the most underrated fighterin boxing today, imo. I would love to see a fight between him and Baby Bull. As far as moving up in weight to face some of the big boys, if he can carry his skills and not lose a step at the higher weight, then I'm all for it and think it would be a great matchup, particularly against Floyd.

The one guy Mayweather skipped over that he probably should have fought. If you ever want to mention Mayweather as ducking someone, Casamayor is the ONLY possibility.

casamayor is the man. hatton/casamayor needs to be made and the winner could fight PBF. casamayor isn't the kind of draw that PBF is looking for though. but he's a damn good fighter
