  • Forgotten Name: Danny Romero

Romero was one of the most exciting little men of all time. Without Romero, maybe Tapia isn't the big star he is today. He could punch, particularly with the left hook up and downstairs. He was one of the most electric fighters I've ever seen.

But he had his limitations. He couldn't deal with movement well, because he always needed his feet set to get leverage. He did a lot of damage to his body by making the unnatural low weights of 112-118. And he never did fully adjust to 122 (Although I thought he got jobbed and really beat Vuyani Bungu). He faded late in fights because of his weight.

What do you think of Romero?

I remeber Ring Magazine saying after he beat Tejedor how he would pick up titles from Fly to Feather or better and was a Hall of Fame Lock. The hype around him and Junior Jones coming up has not been equaled since. That is no exaggeration either. Romero stayed loyal to his father for way too long and could have done better with a wordclass trainer. The Romero-Tapia fight got alot of Hype being a 115 battle more than any before or since.

I havent forgotten about Little Red, though this is probably better suited for Boxing Historu forum. I'm trying to compile his fight collection on dvd.

You are thinking Danny Little Red Lopez not Danny Kid Dynamita Romero.

lol...Oops! You are absolutely right! I bow my head in shame.
However, I DO remember Danny Romero...who can forget his war with Tapia? Also, his next to last fight was a draw against Alex Ali Baba, a guy who had just begun training and teaching at my gym (and a class act in and out of the ring); we threw a lil' congratulation party for him (yes it was a draw, but he was a big underdog going into the fight and Danny Romero's name still carried weight).
I'm surprised that he is still showing as an active fighter, though he coming up on a year on inactivity in about a week.
