  • "Legendary Nights" '08

Well now that this has been confirmed, I'd like to get everybody's opinions on which fights HBO Sports should choose to chronicle for the new mini-series. So, which fights would you like to see on "Legendary Nights" next year? (Sorry if somebody already posted a thread like this, I work a lot and haven't been online much recently.)

I'm kind of still mulling it over in my head really, the only fight(s) that pop out immediately that I want to see HBO Sports do a story on would obviously be the epic trilogy of Barrera/Morales.

    What about you?

Yeah Castillo/Corrales definately deserves to have it's own special and aside from Barrera/Morales, it was the only other fight that when I really sat down and thought hard about which fights deserved it the most, sprang to mind. Followed immediately by "oh ****, that was Showtime".

I'm sure one day there will be some sort of special or documentary about Castillo/Corrales. As in most fight fans minds it was the greatest fight of the last 20-25 years. Showtime should definately look into that, and it'd be another great way to honor Diego Corrales.

On a side note, I keep racking my brain about which fights I'd pick other than Barrera/Morales but then I compare whatever fight I'm thinking of to Barrera/Morales and I'm like "well....no, it wasn't that good by comparison."

I'm sure some could make the case for Gatti/Ward though, but to me, they were just two B class fighters beating the **** out of each other. It was great entertainment but it will never stack up in my eyes, to, say Hagler/Hearns. Because Hagler and Hearns were A class fighters and Gatti and Ward, despite their tremendous heart and courage, weren't.

Id like to see them dig even a bit deeper for a couple of these, for example Kennedy Mckinney v. MA Barerra...this was a fight that really gave BAD legitimacy as an A level boxing program.

Did it have all the hype that a PPV fight has of course not but was it one of HBO's finer moments...I think so and would much rather watch a legendary nights of the above two waririors and their epic brawl compared to the superfight between Oscar v. Floyd we all just witnessed.

                  Which Jones/Tarver fight?

                  On the first fight:

Alot of people consider that one of Roy Jones Jr.'s worst performances. I myself see it as one of his best. For the first time in his career he got to show us that when faced with adversity that he had a champions heart along with his great talent. Roy did pull that fight out like a great fighter is suppose to. So I consider it one of his best performances.

I think second fight in many peoples eyes was the more legendary one. That is the one I think would be more likely to make Legendary Nights because of how shocking it was. Roy Jones Jr., a man considered unstoppable, suddenly stopped in two rounds by one punch. Tarver caught Roy at the perfect time, and he stepped in and countered with a wicked left hand. Roy never saw it coming. It was the inevitable really, most great fighters eventually get beat. Remember Roy was 35 when this happened. I don't care how good Roy looked against Ruiz at 34, this was not a prime Roy Jones Jr. Look at how Sugar Ray Leonard was doing at 35 and Muhammad Ali aswell. Many great fighters begin to lose it in their mid thirties. We didn't see it with Jones right away, but Tarver was the guy who exposed it. Ruiz couldn't expose it because although he was bigger/stronger, he was skilled enough to bother Roy. But Tarver being a tall southpaw who waited his whole life to fight Roy Jones was the perfect guy. Many people will look at the fact that Tarver was 35 too, thats true but Tarver hadn't faught as many fights as Jones. And Tarver isn't a guy who relies on speed and reflexes to win either. I do give Tarver credit for the win, he did land a great punch against a guy who was never hit by those kind of punches. Tarver does deserve credit for that stunning night.

                    Hopkins/Trinidad (is a no-brainer.

                    Bowe/Golota I and II

Tua/Ibeabuchi ( okay, I know that one will never happen but...perhaps it should be mentioned just because it was so damn good.

Barrera/Hamed (or did they already do that one?)
