Whitaker had much more personality in the ring and out than Floyd does. Pernell stood man up a lot more than people care to remember and he was certainly more entertaining to watch. People didn't like Whitaker because of his abrasive personality and showboating more than his lack of excitement in his fights.
The first fight with mcgirt was a bit more competitive, but the second fight wasnt even close though, i guess i have alot of angst about that fight because mcgirt did alot of ****ing crying about being hurt. Whitaker won a very wide desicion the 2nd time which in my opinion, he probably should have gotten the first time.

and i understand what you are saying about whitaker, but those are things people are more objective to notice now, when he was in the ring and in his prime, i dont remember anyone outside the black community who championed his cause.

I've always said that to even compare PBF to Whitaker is an insult to whitaker.

Whitaker wins it by easy ass kicking.

Well all of the commentary on these fighters is right in our faces now, thanks to the internet. I almost feel like that's why losing a couple of fights back in the day wasn't frowned upon quite as much. Now that we have these internet boards, every ******* can go out and give their opinion on everything, and there are a lot of people who equate a loss with being "overrated".

I'm getting off base a bit, but it somewhat relates to why there is so much negative commentary on Floyd. If we didn't have these message boards to browse, we wouldn't hear average Joe from the streets opinion of different fighters...the dialogue would center a lot more on literature from writers and telecasts. And obviously from other boxing fans around your community. I feel like a good amount of the informed opinions on Floyd are positive...and you certainly don't see writers bashing his skills like so many jackasses on this board do.

The only thing that bothers me about Floyd is the fact that he's retiring. It's not so much that I want to see him get his ass beat (unless he's fighting my boy Cotto), it's more that he still has so many great accomplishments ahead of him, and it's a shame that real boxing fans don't get to see one of the most skilled fighters of the modern era fight any more.

Sweet Pete his actual nickname, later changed to Sweet P by close unanimous decision. Whitaker was a slick boxer you used his movement to avoid contact but not in a running fashion. He would make mayweather miss and dig hooks into Mayweather's gut and make it a hard and dirty fight for Mayweather. Although I was not a big fan of his, I've grown to respect Whitaker more today as he was a great boxer that didn't have the power to ko but nevertheless never ran. He would get in the trenches and make it a dirty fight, that would be something Mayweather would not be able to handle.

either way, i love how people hang on sweet pea's nuts now, but if this was 1993 and we were on a boxing board BBS people would be ripping whitaker like some of you rip floyd. Alot of you are very hypocritical in your statements about how much you hate floyd, but "love" whitaker.

whitaker engaged far more than Mayweather, you know this.
