Why Are There So Many Inactive Heavyweights?

Something about boxing puzzles me: long periods of inactivity by some of the heavyweights. Why does someone like Ty Fields who moved up the ranks to become a contender, not schedule a fight after many months? Why does Serguei Lyakhovich have no fight scheduled yet? Why has TOS become inactive? There are many others...in fact, over 35 of the top 50 heavyweights on BoxRec have nothing scheduled...

This doesn't make sense...as Teddy Atlas says, inactivity reduces a fighter's capability. Some have only one or two fights a year...doesn't that hurt their careers? Even some young prospects are going many months without scheduling another fight. I wonder why?

easy....the way they train is eat, **** and sleep.....a boxer like that is not going to be a champ....it must be hard to be a heavyweight and train everyday like the lighter weights

Those two fighters you mention have puzzled me as well, especially Fields. A few years ago it seemed that he was finally moving up his level of competition, but now he's just back to going no place. I used to want to see a fight between him and Valuev, two giants, tho Fields has since trimmed down from his earlier 300 lbs.

I don't know what's up with Lyakhovich. I don't know what was wrong with him when he fought Briggs and I don't know why he hasn't fought since.

In the old days boxers usually fought much more frequently.

The inactivity is ruining Ty Fields opportunity to be a genuine contender a make some decent money before he gets too much older. But it is good to see a few genuinely ambitious heavyweights like Povetkin and Chambers fighting frequently.

what about tua he looked good in his last televised fight

What about McCall, not inactive but he has had a lot of wins lately why is he not taking a title shot. Same story with Juan Carlos Gomez.

Maybe the just like the Money.

McCall is my favourite HW of all time.

That man has the best chin i`ve ever seen

Okay he cried that one time in the ring, but he was going through some bad times.

I hope he comes back and knocks out all these guys at HW.

HW fighters make so much money and probably feel they don't have to work as hard as lower weights...

guys like Bernard Hopkins, Pacman or Mayweather train several times a week. Heavyweights probably jog a little bit, lift some weights and seriously train only a couple of times a week...

That is only my assumption, but it may be true...

Plus due to the fact that a fight can change or be ended on one HW punch, promoters and managers are very protective of their title holders and top contenders...(even though ANY fight in the lower weights can change with one punch)

Wlad seems like the only one who genuinely WANTS to unify...

Fields fought a guy who lost 4 out of his last 5 in January, and he is scheduled to fight a TBA in August. What's the point?

Gomez is scheduled to fight Bakhtov who was KO'd by Montana. Montana was himself KO'd by Tye Fields in 3 in 2005.
