I'd have loved for Gomez to have made a move after beating Sam on HBO. Instead, he got blitzed by Diaz on Telefutura - what was it a year later. It's not bad that he lost - almost everyone gets caught and/or has a bad night, it happens. It's what he's done since then, which is **** all.

If he has the talent, sure why not root for him to succeed? But he's never faced anyone to suggest he's worth rallying behind. But damn, he's been living off of "potential" ever since he moved up to heavyweight.

The "I can only fight who they put in front of me" line is a copout. People called Cotto, Margarito and countless others on it when they hid behind it. If Gomez has that little say, then he needs to start looking for loopholes to get out of his managerial and promotional contracts, because he obviously has the wrong people whispering in his ear.

That's all fair enough, although I still think Gomez is willing to fight the best. A lot of it has been his own fault with a bit of bad luck too regarding the Ray Leonard situation etc. We'll just have to wait and see if he steps it up. The guy he's fighting next is fairly poor too, but he at least has a heartbeat unlike the last opponent. Perhaps a good performance there can lead to something.

Gomez looked real promising when he put Sam on the deck early and won the decision, but I think Universum accused him of not passing a drug test, then after he got flattened by Yanqui Diaz not too long after that he gets back with Universum?

I see Gomez is ranked 8th by the WBA. Another impressive win could move him up another notch or two - he may get a shot at the WBA heavyweight title within a year or so.

On the plus side Gomez has talent to burn & lots of skill.

Downside is discipline, partying, focus, recreational drugs, etc.

Like a number of the better Cuban fighters who came over, fell in with the wrong crowd & lost the discipline, though not as badly as the ones who fell in with the Florida crowd of Cuban exiles (not a nice bunch).

Seems the more disciplined ones tend to stay at home.

Still think he could win a version of the crown for a while if he gets focused, & would like to see him in the mix with the top guys.

Just hope he can get it together enough to do so, because he's a pleasure to watch when he is.

I seen him fight Sam with his tongue lolling out of his head. I don't think he's playing with a full deck.
