    NJ disputes Briggs' health claims!

    NJ disputes Briggs' health claims!

    Wednesday, June 6 2007

The NJSACB had no concerns about Briggs'
physical ability to compete that night.

After losing his world title to Sultan Ibragimov Saturday night in Atlantic City, former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs stated that he had been forced to fight even though he was ill. That allegation has been disputed by New Jersey boxing authorities. According to deputy attorney general Nick Lembo, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board specifically assigned ringside physician Dr. Michael Kelly to review all of Briggs pre-licensing medicals and to conduct both the pre and post fight medical exams. "Mr. Briggs' lungs were examined both prior to and after the bout," said Lembo. "Mr. Briggs was questioned about how he felt after the bout. Mr. Briggs was cleared to fight by Dr. Kelly and Dr. Kelly saw no reason for him to seek medical treatment after the bout. The NJSACB had no concerns about Briggs' physical ability to compete that night."

Why is this news? Isn't Briggs' health a moot point now?

Yep, yesterday's news. As for Briggs, as they say, good riddance to bad rubbish. He was probably THE most undeserving heavyweight champ in history.

agree on the second part, but as far as you being out $30 - your own fault for thinking you'd get your money's worth from a card like that.

I was desperate and needed a fight, I told my wife I was either going to beat the **** out of her or I was going to order Briggs vs. Ibragimov-I even gave her the choice.

... and your wife watched the card, afterward regretting her choice to not take one for the team.

nah, I feel your pain. truth be told, once the clev-det game became a rout, everyone in the room asked if the fight was still on. I ended up ordering it, with the deal that one of my buddies hosts Cotto-Zab this weekend. So technically, I saved $15, since the original plan was to order this weekend's card.
